    Permanent replacement for McFarland
hasn’t yet been found, Griesen says
ncoiur* irom ragy l
cedurcs had to he implemented, he
said.
McFarland’s letter said: “Conse
quently, this situation has decreased
the support base I need from my
supervisors to get the job done and has
taken its toll on me personally.”
Griesen said McFarland’ s resigna
tion did not surprise him, because the
position is highly stressful.
“It would take an exceptional
manager to feel comfortable with that
kind of stress,” Griesen said. “People
burn out.”
Griesen said the Office of Scholar
Gricscn has named John Beacon,
director of admissions, as interim
director of financial aid.
Gricsen said Beacon’s appoint
ment reflects his wish to not further
diminish staff resources in the finan
cial aid office. By appointing Beacon,
Gricscn said, he hasn’t taken any fi
nancial aid staff members away from
their current duties.
“John will add manpower and is
very experienced in handling com
puter based student information sys
tems,” Gricsen said.
Gricscn said he hasn’t considered a
permanent replacement for MeFar
land, and trial he won t rush into a
search.
“T he search process is Uxidistract
ing and there arc loo many critical
things going on right now,” he said.
“I’m giving John a stab at it, then
we’ll talk about the future.”
Beacon is a proven administrator
who is well-suited in dealing with
massive problems, Gricscn said. He
has 21 years of admissions experi
ence, and has been director of admis
sions at the University of Nebraska
Lincolti since March 1987.

ships and Financial Aid has made
significant progress in some areas, as
a result of the work of “everyone in
the office, including Bill (McFar
land).”
“A lot of very positive contribu
tions have been made by the staff
down there and by outside staff,” he
said.
FAM should help office

ware with the custom-made system,
Griesen said.
These two problems prevented use
of the FAM system and caused late
mailings of financial award letters to
students both years.
The award letters should have
been mailed in April, but were not. All
award letters for this year will be
mailed “within days,” Griesen said.
Griesen said the system will be
worth the trouble it has caused when
it is totally operational.
“It is a very sophisticated financial
aid management system,” he said.
“Once it’s up, it will be good and
helpful.”
Griesen said financial aid employ
ees arc seeing benefits in the system's
use every day.
By next fall, Gicscn said, the sys
tem will be used more and, by next
spring, should be working well
enough to have all financial award
