rage o -'-— , ‘Melbourne Vice"just does not cut it CROC from Page 7 spending a whole movie in New York? Anything after the first movie ended might be a nice little update, but would also be one of the dullest comedy/adventure movies. Obviously, somebody took the otherwise sensible Hogan aside and tossed bagfullsof the studio’s money at him until he broke down in fits of sobs and whimpers and begged for his dignity back. That gone, he took the money and made the movie. When we last saw the affable Mick “Crocodile” Dundee, our charming roguish hero had just reached the end of his fish-out-of-water talc and was about to marry the beautiful rich girl. I, for one, don’t want to sec a perfectly good charming rogue ad venturer become a doting, domesti cated little Dagwood working in “Daddy’s” firm — it’s too painful to watch — but nevertheless, that’s where “Croc I” ended, so that’s where “Croc II” begins. Croc isn’t quite working in Daddy’s office yet, but he is a com pletely domesticated little houschus band, puttering around the Heiress’s stately Contemporary modem apart ment (as opposed to his leaky tin shack back home), never missing a soap and hanging around playgrounds during the day, all while wearing his trademark genuine Crocskin jacket. And he’s still carrying around his big knife, a.k.a. “naf” (as in “Now that’s a Naf’). Some evil drug dealers kidnap ol’ Croc’s new bride and, by golly, that really licks him off. He seeks help from a New York (gang). Being gang ^-1 manners, ana merciuiu ihuc^huwu and all, they demur But when the old Crocpot impresses them with his Naf throwing ability, they eagerly swarm to the cause. Together they spring the dame, then our nom-de-reptiled hero and his reunited beauty head off for Australia, so she can hide. Now the Crocccr can show us what he can do in his neck of the woods. We then tune in for an hour of “Melbourne Vice,” complete with Cuban drug dealers running around the Outback in silk shirts. There’s even a few overhead shots of flocks ol birds that get scared up by the camera helicopter. The biggest problem with this movie isn’t even the most obvious one, which is big enough. Hogan, the writer, has managed to come up with a few scenes that could have breathed life into a very relaxed adventure film, but with one or two exceptions, they're left incomplete, or just indif ferently directed. The excitement isn’t there, the big villain isn’t all that villainous, the action is fairly tame and the laughs arc only occasional.
