Neumann: This class similar to 1986’s Nebraska wrestling coach Tim Neumann introduced his 1988 re cruiting class by saying it’s compa rable to his group last season that was ranked third in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News. Neumann signed seven high school athletes and two junior college transfers to letters-of-intcnt. “This class is real similar to the 1986 class,” Neumann said. “On paper, this is one of the best group of kids we’ve signed since I’ve been here.” Neumann said he wouldn’t be surprised if all of the high school recruits earned All-America honors by finishing among the top six wres tlers in their weight class in the nation. He said the high school athletes combined to for a 703-43-0 record while winning 16 state champion ships. l‘They arc all outstanding,” Neu mann said. Neumann said the recruiting class causes him to become excited about the future. “They are all good students, and they have the character it lakes to make the transition from high school to Big Eight wrestling,” Neumann said. “They all have the potential to excel at the Division I level.” The recruits include: • John Buxton, a three-time South Dakota slate champion who will compete in the 118-pound weight class. Buxton, from Spearfish, S.D., posted a 156-7 career record and placed third and fourth in the United Stales Wrestling Federation Junior National Championships. • Butch McFcc, a transfer from Garden City (Kan.) Community Col lege. McFce, a state champion while attending Hale High School in Tulsa, Okla., was the top-ranked wrestler in the nation’s 118-pound weight class before an injury ended his season. • Darren Droegcmuellcr, an Os sco, Minn., native who compiled a 145-9 record while winning two state titles in the 142-pound weight class.
