Chatwin said her father Ed had
taught her the basics of softball while
coach Wolforth finessed those points.
In the second game, Margie Ogro
dowicz flied out in the top of the sixth
inning. Chatwin singled and moved to
second on a single by Jane Kremer. A
single by Janelle Frese scored
Chatwin.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Creighton tied the score when they
loaded the bases and Joy Schope hit a
sacrifice fly to score Judy Fitzgerald.
In the seventh inning, Katy Wolda
flicd out but Leeanna Miles doubled
off an error by Creighton’s Brenda
Konfrst. A single by Chatwin scored
Miles. Kremer then hit a double to
score Chatwin but was tagged out.
In the bottom of the seventh in
ning, Creighton’s Rice Elwell
grounded out and Nebraska’s Donna
Deardorff struck out the next two
batters to give the Huskers a 3-1 vic
tory.
In the first game, Creighton’s
Marina Watson hit a triple in the
fourth inning and scored on Schopc’s
single.
But Nebraska tied the score in the
seventh inning when Lori Sippel hit a
single. Sippel’s designated hitter
Andrea Young scored when Ann
Halsne hit a double.
The Bluejays came back in the
ninth inning when Jody Schwartz was
walked. A sacrifice by Schope moved
Schwartz to second and a single by
Kelly Brookhart brought her home to
give the Bluejays their 2-1 victory.

Cattish tournament appeals to average angler
By Tim Hartmann
Senior Reporter
A catfish tournament Saturday at
Lake McConaughy in Ogallala might
appeal to poor college students.
“This tournament is for the aver
age person,” said Larry Snelling, the
vice president of Catfishermen are
Tops, Inc., which is sponsoring the
event. “This is for the fisherman who
can’t afford a $200 entry fee, and
wants to take a few fish home and eat
them.”
Saturday’s tournament, which is
the first of 13 tournaments CAT is
holding this summer, starts at 8 a.m.
and lasts until 5 p.m. The entry fee for
a team of two fishermen is $25 for
members and $35 for non-mem
bers.
Each team has all day to bring in as
many as 10 catfish, which must be at
least 15 inches long, to the weigh-in
area. The team with the highest total
weight will win first prize. The 10
teams with the highest total weight
will receive prizes, and a $100 prize
will also be given 10 the person who
catches the biggest fish of the day.
Snelling, a University of Ne
braska-Lincoln Food Stores em
ployee, said the amount of prize
money will be determined by the
number of entries. At least 70 percent
of the money collected wil 1 be distrib
uted as prizes, he said.
“Last year, we had over 20 teams
and we expect it to be double that this
year,” Snelling said.
Snelling said the only thing that
could hinder the number of entries
Saturday would be bad weather.
To prevent cheating, Snelling
said, no dead fish or fish with heavy
stringer marks will be accepted at the
weigh-in area. Also, no fish may be
caught within 25 yards of another
boat.
“We have judges on the shore and
judge boats on the lake to keep an eye
on that type of thing,” Snelling said.
CAT was formed in January 1986
and now has about 70 members,
Snelling said. He said the organiza
tion attempts to educate the public
about catfishing and about the conser
vation of natural resources.
Snelling said CAT has been in
volved in several conservation proj
ects this year and has held several
seminars dealing with conservation.
CAT also teaches its members about
catfishing, so it is an excellent place
for new fishermen to learn, he
said.
“Last year we had a team that
didn’t catch a fish in the first three
tournaments, but after they attended a
seminar they were in the money all
the time,” he said.
Snelling said the catfish is the ideal
fish to catch because they make a
good meal.
“A lot of people talk big about
bass, but nobody takes them home
and eats them,” he said. “Some
people talk about walleye, but they
don’t catch many. When those people
want to bring some fish home to eat,
they catch catfish.”
