Students take studies to heart By Mick Dyer Senior Reporter The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That concept is essential to the study of quantum physics. Somehow, when you add up all the charges of the sub-atomic particles that compose the atom, the overall atomic charge is larger than the calcu lated value. It’s a mystery that has both baffled and inspired physicists for years. This principle also applies to anat omy. When you add up all the cells and hair and stuff, you get something more—something even more myste rious and exciting. Life. Anatomists study the interaction of the parts that make the whole. Through an understanding of the deli cate balance of the parts, the whole can be maintained when the balance is disturbed. That’s a polite way of saying people in the health field need to know how the body works in order to fix it when it breaks down. The dentistry college building on East Campus has a macroscopic ana tomical research laboratory. It is one of four major labs of its kind in the state. In that lab, University of Ne braska Lincoln dental students re ceive identical anatomical training to that medical students receive at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. As you walk into the lab, you no tice various diagrams and models to help the students understand the parts they are studying in their textbooks. You may also notice the not-so-subtle aroma of a formalin solution and the 20 or so rectangular metal boxes — about 2 1/2 feet by 2 1/2 feet by 7 feet — resting about 4 feet off the floor on metal legs. These boxes contain cadavers, human bodies donated to science by their deceased owners, which stu See CADAVERS on 10 Pickles Sounds Like Spring Sale i 'Ndir / DEACON BLUE —— l eaintown + —•:*Swsr*» „„ ~^*63l - ‘ [Jj Ip/cassette.$6.37 compact disc... $11.99 Ip/casserte.$11gg compact disc ...» Compaq f*5c '; • j*^7 Save on thesa fresh sounds and more.
