Rodgers caps ‘best spring’ with solid performance
HUSKERS from Page 11
Walker, outside linebackers Mike
Croel and Jeff Mills, and safety Tim
Jackson.
“During the first two series, I don’t
think emotionally they (the first-team
defense) were in the game,” McBride
said. ‘‘Then, about the third series,
they really started playing well. They
thought they’d better step up the pace
because they were getting knocked
around pretty good.”
The Whites took the lead in the
first quarter on a 15-yard option
keeper by Dunlap with 10:06 remain
ing. Gregg Barrios added the extra
point.
In the second quarter, linebacker
Scott Kurtz picked off a Dunlap pass
and raced 74 yards for the Reds’ first
score of the day. The Reds took the
lead with 48 seconds left in the first
half when Morgan Gregory returned a
punt 59 yards. Chris Drennan’s extra
point made it 14-7 Reds at halftime.
In the third quarter, Red I-back
Terry Rodgers scored on a 5-yard run
with 9:57 left. Rodgers, who played
for both teams, led all rushers in the
game with a combined total of 105
yards on 25 carries.
Osborne said Rodgers was the
“one guy that held up and had the best
spring” this year.
White fullback Brian Harchleroad
cut the Reds’ lead to seven, 21-14, on
a 1 -yard run with 7:31 left in the third
quarter, but that’s as close as they
would come.
Drennan added a 37-yard field
goal at the end of the third period, and
Jim Kerwin and Ed Outlaw scored
touchdowns in the game’s final 2:34
to ensure the Red victory.
Besides Rodgers, McCam led the
Reds with 35 yards rushing and com
pleted five of six passes for 63 yards
and one interception.
Dunlap led all passers, completing
10 of 19 for 122 yards. He also rusned
for 28 yards and a touchdown on 10
carries.
Osborne said despite the injuries
and remaining areas of concern,
Nebraska has the talent to have a good
team next season.
“But the difference between a
good team and a great team will be
getting a good combination in the
defensive line with some depth,”
Osborne said. “We re still feeling our
way along a little there.”
Orioles’ woes continue as Kansas City posts 3-1 win
KANSAS CITY (AP) — The Bal
timore Orioles sunk to 0-18 Sunday
and stumbled closer to the worst los
ing streak in history as Bret Saber
hagen tossed a six-hitter to lead Kan
sas City to a 3-1 win.
' The Orioles’ slide is the longest in
the American League since the Wash
ington Senators dropped 18 straight in
1959, tying the teams for the fifth
worst streak. The major league record
is 23, set by the Philadelphia Phillies
in 1961 and the AL record is 20, set
three times.
The Orioles extended their record
for season-opening defeats and their
team mark for consecutive losses, not
including five straight losses to end
exhibition play.
