Martin won the fight by decision. Greeks trade toe-to-toe blows for chairty and fraternity pride By Steve Sipple Senior Reporter For most of the boxers at Friday night’s Sigma Chi All-Greek Fight Night, it wasn’t a question of who would win, but rather who would survive. A loud, rowdy crowd estimated at 1,900 watched University of Ne braska-Lincoln Greeks pound each other for charity at the 4-H Hall at State Fair Park. Proceeds from the even went to Wallace Village For Children in Broomfield, Colo. Wallace Village is a treatment center for learning-disabled or emo tionally disturbed children. The first fight set the tone for the night. Sigma Nu’s Jerry Woodward and Acacia’s Travis Norris each opened the first round with a non-stop barrage of punches. But by the begin ning of the third round, the two Fight ers barely were able to lift their arms. At one point, Norris stumbled into Woodward and the two fell to the mat. Norris won the bout by decision. Sigma Nu’s Jerome Torres, a 175 pounder from North Platte, avenged his fraternity’s opening-fight loss with a decision over Phi Delta Theta’s Steve Thompson. Torres, who was trained by Lincoln’s Ray Menefee, said the match made him realize how difficult boxing is. “I didn’t think it would be as tough as it was,” said Torres. “It’s quite an experience.” At one point in the fight, Torres missed Thompson with a lunging left hook and nearly fell through the ring ropes. “I got a little wild and lost track of my fundamentals,” Torres said. “With everything happening, the crowd roaring, it’s hard to keep your fundamentals in line.” After Sigma Chi’s Matt Analora won a decision over Phi Kappa Psi’s Chad Mann, Phi Delta Theta’s Scott Cox dccisioncd Delta Tau Delta’s Dave Zauha. Cox’s win ended the Delts’ 39-fighl All-Greek Fight Night win streak. “God, I wanted it bad,” said Cox, a 148-poundcr from Gehring. “The win-streak played a big part of it. But 1 just wish it wasagainst another guy.” Unlike the other fights, Cox and See FIGHT on 14 UNL Dairy _ this week’s specials _ - ,_ (April 25-29) / both Campus Unions ^ 2:30-3:00 & 7:30-9:00 / .
