Lieurance criticized for critical review Williams defended If Charles Licurance would have put his pen and paper down long enough to kick up his heels and give a yelp last Friday night, he may have enjoyed the Hank Williams Jr. con cert a little more. He may also have understood more of what Hank is all about by listening to these words as he sane: “We are a young country. We like all kinds (of) people and music, ‘cause we don’t draw no lines.” “1 am very proud of my daddy’s name — although his kind of music and mine ain’t exactly the same.” “A country boy can survive.” Hank says it best, and his display of soul, diversity and sheer power of voice — coupled with his musical prowess on several instruments and ability to take in the crowd like we were ail his rowdy friends — shows mmmmmmim—mmmmm—m-IS*-1 why Bocephus was awarded the CM A’s Entertainer of the Year for the second year in a row. I know of four friends, two profes sional area journalists and more than 6,000 rowdy fans who all laughed, rocked, boogied, were moved and, most importantly, had a good oF lime with the new king of country blues. Where were you? I suggest you leave that boy alone and let him sing his song. Sincerely, A spittin’, chewin’, grinnin’, hay seed, barely educablc, manure stompin’, shit-kickin’, Hank-lovin’ fan. Matt Evertson freshman news-editorial Stereotypes denounced We arc responding to Charles Lieurancc’s review of the Hank Wil liams Jr. concert in the April 11 Daily Nebraskan. Although we agree with his distaste for Williams’ music, we thoroughly resent Licurance’s insinu ation that cowboys in general arc “spittin’, chewin’, grinnin’ red necks.” It seems remarkably strange to us that the very same night Lieurance experienced Williams’ fans as “trying to pound the pulp out of any one not in the recommended cowboy garb,” we were at the UNL Rodeo where no one was even slightly hurt and no brawls took place. As we were taking tickets, we were able to see that not everyone wore “recommended cowboy garb.” Karen, in particular, doesn’t own a single pair of Wran glers and not a single country music album is included in her music collec tion, yet she has never had the slight est problem with cowboys or cow girls, some of whom arc her good friends. We also find it ironic that Licurance found it appropriate to say that the show closed with “some tired redneck ‘South’s gonna do it again’ comments, complete with fag-bait ing, sexism, racism and other narrow minded staples of the manure-stomp ing faith.” It seems Licurance feels that prejudice is just fine if it isagainsl the “manure-stomping faith,” “drunk hayseeds,” “spittin’, chewin’, grin nin’ rednecks” or the “barely cdu cablc crowd.” While we do not agree with Williams’ anti-homosexual, sexist or racist remarks cither, we find it very offensive that Lieurance feels it necessary to make anti-rural com ments to denounce Williams’ preju dices. These remarks were obviously made by someone who knows little to nothing about real cowboys. Saying that wearing a hat and boots makes youacowboyisaboutasintelligentas saying wearing a 48-D bra and a wig makes you Dolly Parton. Both of us were born and raised in rural communities and we know these prejudices arc totally unfounded. So until Licurance gets some education concerning rural America, we would prefer he keep his narrow-minded opinions to himself. Karen Ditsch English/pre-law Rosanna M. Seamann political science/French members of UNL Rodeo Club Reader thanks DN In response to Charles Lieurancc's review of the Hank Williams Jr. con cert in the April 11 paper, I would like to thank the Daily Nebraskan for giving us a little press and suggest that maybe next time you run out of ar ticles about football practice you could run a story about the power lifting meets we have had and you failed to cover, such as the state col legiate power-lifting championships. We placed first as a team and had several first-place individuals. As for “ill-advisedly” being sent into the crowd, we knew who tried to start disturbances, and those people did not see the end of the show. If you have a spare reporter avail able who is not at the football sta dium, you could cover Mr. and Ms. Nebraska Body-building meet on April 24, which the weight-lifting club is sponsoring.
