The Nebraska bowling team will
try to maintain emotional control to
win the National Collegiate Bowling
Championships today through Satur
day in Denver, Coach Bill Straub
said.
Straub said the No. 2-ranked
Huskers will need to have a business
like attitude when they travel to
Denver’s Fair Lanes Bellcview for
the three-day competition.
“Once you get to this level, there
are about a hal f a dozen teams that are
equal in physical ability,” Straub
said. “We need to have emotional
control, which is 98 percent of bowl
ing.”
Straub said it is tough to maintain
emotional control at the national
competition because the spectators
constantly yell. He said bowling at
nationals is similar to when a college
basketball player shoots a clutch free
throw,
Straub said Nebraska will be
emotional entering the competition
because it missed qualifying for na
tionals last year. The Huskers
avenged that miss this season by
defeating second-place Illinois State
by more than 450 pins to win their
sectional.
HHHBMMU
Straub said he wants Nebraska to
have the same type of emotional
control as the defending national
champion, Wichita State. He said the
Shockers, who split two contests
against Nebraska this year, have
remained calm throughout the season
even though they have been ranked
No. 1.
Joining Wichita State and Ne
braska at the national competition
will be Arizona State, Fresno State,
Fullerton State, Illinois State, More
head State, Florida, Michigan State,
Central Michigan, Erie (N.Y.) Com
munity College and Hudson Valley
(N.Y ) Community College.
Straub said the 12 teams will bowl
six games today and six rriday. 1 ne
lop six teams will bowl 18 games
Saturday, with each player bowling
two frames a game. The top three
teams from that bracket play Satur
day night, with the No. 2 team taking
on the No. 3 team in a two-game roll
off. The winner of that matchup will
play the No. 1 team tor the national
championship in a two-game roll
off.
“Our first goal is to get through
Friday and into the top six,” Straub
said. “Our second goal is to move to
the top three. Once you get to the top
three, it becomes a crap shoot where
you throw the dice because whoever
wins just happens to be the team at the
rigm piacc ui uic. ugm
Straub said seniors Mike Shady
and Andy Hylen will lead the Husk
ers. He said he is confident Shady, a
first-team All-America last season,
will be selected this season, too. He
said Hylen has an excellent chance of
earning All-America honors this
year.
“Andy and Mike are so good they
allow the other team members to
relax ” Straub said. “No team in col
lege has any two players as good as
Andy and Mike.”
Joining Shady and Hylen will be
Frank Schmall, Lance Millage and
Craig Her/inger.
Junior-college forward
may sign with Huskers
From Staff Reports
Nebraska women’s basketball
coach Angela Beck will learn next
week whether she will sign a junior
college forward who is described by
her coach as a versatile player with
misleading statistics.
Shawn Taylor, a 6-foot-1 forward
from Barton County Junior College in
Great Bend, Kan., will decide Mon
day or Tuesday whether she will at
tend Arizona State, Colorado, Wyo
ming, Virginia Tech or Nebraska,
Cougar coach Jerry McCarty said.
McCarty said Taylor, who aver
aged 9.2 points and 5.8 rebounds a
game for the 22-9 Cougars, possesses
misleading statistics because Great
Bend employs a run-and-gun offense
that uses all 10 players. He said Tay
lor would have compiled more im
pressive statistics if she had axcraged
more than 32 minutes a game.
“Those statistics arc misleading
because she’s a good player,’’ Mc
Carty said. “She was an impact part of
our ballclub.”
McCarty said Taylor’s strengths
arc her quickness, defense and ability
to score inside. He said Taylor, who
teamed with Nebraska guard Amy
Bullock two seasons ago at Barton
County, is also a versatile player who
played some guard this season.
“She even played some at the
point, but that was out of despera
tion,” McCarty said. “About the only
place she didn’t play was the five
(center) spot.”
McCarty said Taylor was im
pressed by her recruiting trip to Ne
braska He said the Comhuskers have
an instant advantage in the recruiting
battle because they employ an up
tempo style of play.
“We like to run and gun, because
we like to get a lot of things done,”
McCarty said. “So she’s used to
Nebraska’s type of offense.”
Johnson homer puts
Huskers past Griffons
From Staff Reports
Marcel Johnson hit a three-run
home run and Paul Henry allowed

innings to lead the Nebraska baseball
team to a 12-2 win over Missouri

Nebraska beat the Griffons 5-1 in
the second game. Both games were
played at Buck Bcltzcr Field.
The Comhuskcrs, ranked No. 17 in
the Collegiate Bascball/ESPN na
tional Top 30, raised their record to
30-8.Missouri Western fell to 11-30.
Johnson hit his lowering, 400-foot
blast over the left field fence in the
bottom of the first inning. The home
run was Johnson’s fourth of the year
and second in two days.
After scoring a single run in the
third inning, Nebraska struck for
three runs in the fifth. Shawn
Buchanan singled in one run and
scored another during the inning.
Buchanan drew a one-out, bascs
loaded walk in the bottom of the
eighth for Nebraska’s final run. The
game was suspended because of the
10-run rule.
Henry, now 2-0, got the win.
In the second game, Doug
Tegtmeier, McGraw Milhaven and
Dale Kistaitis combined on a six
h uter to lead the Huskers.
