Arts & Entertainment _ ‘Emperor’, Douglas, and Cher winners at Oscars By Charles Lieurance Staff Reporter and Geoff McMurtry Senior Editor “It was a long ways between there and here.” With that acceptance for Best Director, Bernardo Bertolucci, a dark horse for Oscar’s hall of fame, summed up the night during a very unpredictable version of Hollywood’s most revered cere mony. Bertolucci accepted the Best Picture and Best Director awards for “The Last Emperor’’ at the Academy Awards presentation Monday night. Bertolucci’s film captured seven other awards in the course of the evening. The 60th Anniversary Academy Awards ceremony was a symphony of non-Hollywood influences, completing a near sweep of the proceedings by winning nearly every major technical award. The televised portion of the show began by favoring “The Last Emperor,” and that eccentric, foreign-bom epic ended up claiming the major categories. “The Last Emperor” took Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cine matography, Production Design, Sound, Editing and Costume De sign in the Oscar ceremony. Nearly all of the crew and cast for the film was either from Great Britain or China, a rarity in the cloistered his tory of the Oscars. - Bertolucci’s most prominent film, “Last Tango in Paris’' caused a maelstrom of controversy when it was released in 1973 for its now relatively puritanical sex scenes. Bertolucci has remained out of the public eye, both foreign and Ameri can, since then. “The Last Emperor,” a grand styled epic in the tradition of such British staples as “Doctor Zhivago” and “Lawrence of Arabia,” starred Briton Peter O’Toole as the western influence on China to a brilliant cast of actors from the East. Other major award winners in cluded Michael Douglas as Best Actor for his portrayal as the cold, ruthless corporate raider in “Wall Street,” and Sean Connery, who claimed the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Brian De Palma’s “The Untouchables.” Con nery, who was critically favored as James Bond and for his numerous roles in action films, received a standing ovation for his long awaited Oscar coup. The biggest, and perhaps most popular, surprise among the crowd of 6,000 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, was the announcement of the award for Best Actress. The winner was Cher for her role as the star-crossed spinstress forced to choose between two suitors in “Moonstruck.” Also, the best sup porting actress award went to stage veteran Olympia Dukakis for her role as Cher’s mother in the same film. The entire ceremony was eccen tric, allowing such non-Hollywood personalities as Riuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne, Pee Wee Herman and Little Richard to intrude upon a ceremony usually reserved for ei ther the Hollywood elite or the show-biz has-been.
