J.P. Caruso/baily Nebraskan Nebraska quarterback Mickey Joseph eludes a Cornhusker defender during Saturday s scrimmage. Joseph rushed for 22 yards on 11 carries. j Mistakes hurt NU’s second scrimmage By Tim Hartmann Senior Reporter A lack of experience at quarter back and offensive execution prob lems tormented the Nebraska football team during its scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Comhusker coach Tom Osborne said the offense had problems throughout the scrimmage because g junior quarterback Steve Taylor did not play because of a thigh injury. He said that although Gerry Gdowski did a “decent job” of filling in for Taylor, & he was concerned because the offense ^ sputtered with repeated turnovers and penalties. The offense’s lone score of the day came on a 1 -yard touchdown run by I back Terry Rodgers. The defense, however, had a better day. [The defense scored when line backer Mark Hagge recovered a fumble and rambled 37 yards for a touchdown and when comerback Lorenzo Hicks scored on an 82-yard punt return. Chris Drennan added a 45-yard field goal. “The big problem offensively was turnovers and penalties,” Osborne said. “I had hoped that we would see some improvement. We really have to see some improvement there.” Nebraska’s lower offensive units were overwhelmed by the vast num ber of plays the Huskers used, Osborne said. Quarterbacks Mickey Joseph and Mike Preston, who com bined to complete twoof 14 passes for 15 yards, were plagued by inexperi ence, he said. “We’ve got a lot of (plays) in and I think offensively, particularly with the lower units, we’re kind of snowed,” Osborne said. “We’re just making too many mistakes. We’ve got to have a little m ore consistency in the quarterbacking.” I-back Ken Clark, who returned to practice after clearing up grade prob lems earlier this week, Jed all rushers with 48 yards on six carries, while Rodgers added 46 yards on 11 carries. “I thought Terry Rodgers played quite well again,” Osborne said, “and Ken Clark came out and did a few good things.” Osborne said he doesn’tknow if he will use Hicks as a punt returner next season because other players are handling that duty this spring. “I still don’t know if he would be one of the top two returners right now, but I think he did a reasonably good job,” he said. No one was seriously injured at the scrimmage, Osborne said. I-back Tyreese Knox, who pulled a ham string, and tight end Keith Garwick, who suffered a knee injury, are being held out of practice indefinitely. Quarterback Tom Haase, who re ceived a mild concussion, will be back to practice Monday, Osborne said. Husker coach hoping for home-course help By Mark Derowitsch Senior Reporter A home-course advantage will be a new experience for the Nebraska women’s golf team. Comhusker coach Robin Scherer said the Huskers will benefit from staging their first home meet in his tory, the Nebraska Invitational, at the Mahoney Golf Course today and Tuesday. The event begins at 8 a.m. both days, with an additional session at 1 p.m. today. Scherer said the team is used to playing at Mahoney because it has practiced there throughout the spring. The Huskers are entering the invita tional with confidence because they are used to the course, she said. “Any time you golf on your own course, it should help,” Scherer said. “It should be really exciting for the players and their families.” Scherer said Kansas, ranked No. 32 in the nation, and Iowa State will challenge Nebraska for the team title. The remaining teams participating in the two-day invitational are Colorado State, Kansas State, Northern Iowa and Wyoming. A good showing in the tournament will give Nebraska an advantage en tering the Big Eight Tournament April 24-26, Scherer said. “With four of the Big Eight teams playing, it will be a big boost men tally,” Scherer said. “If we play well, hopefully we’ll defeat all or most of the teams.
