Columnist says Red Sox will take pennant in AL East It is Celtic season in Boston, but Beantown is buzzing about its base ball team down the road at Fenway Park. The National Basketball Associa tion playoffs are around the comer and baseball’s September stretch drive is a long way off, but the Red Sox should be thinking about the pennant already. The Red Sox bol stered pitching staff and a talented lineup mixed with both young players and old gives good reason for opti mism in Boston. A headline about the Red Sox in the March 27 Boston Globe read: “The picture is much too sunny.” In Globe columnist Leigh Montvillc’s column, he wrote: “First place. A pennant. A World Series flag flying from the center field pole. When has there been such wall-to-wall opti mism?” Sure, you say, everybody’s talking pennant before the season. All Smith did last year was save a career-high 36 games, which was more than twice as much the entire Red Sox staff. With Smith and Roger Clemens, who is going after an unprecedented third straight Cy Young Award, there should be no losing streaks for the Sox. In addition to Smith and Cle mens, a healthy Bruce Hurst and a stable-minded Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd should mean some extended winning streaks and an American League East Championship. One thing is for sure: The Sox will finish higher than last season’s fifth place. Despite the annual turmoil that surrounds the New York Yankees, Billy Marlin’s club should keep Bos ton from growing complacent. Right fielder Dave Winfield caused a stir during the Yankees’ spring training when he chose to publish his contro versial autobiography. Owner George Sleinbrenncr appears poised to trade his superstar slugger because of the book. Even without Winfield, who drew a standing ovation from 55,802 Yan kee Stadium fans when he ap proached the plate on opening day, the Yankees’ lineup would still be potent. When newcomer Jack Clark comes off the disabled list, Martin’s lineup card will likely read: Rickey Henderson in left field, Willie Ran dolph at second base, Dan Mattingly at first base, Clark at designated hit ter, Winfield in right field and Mike Pagliarulo at third base. With that lineup the Yankees don’t need a great pitching staff. B ut the one they have is more than adequate. Veteran Rick Rhoden showed he is capable Tuesday by throwing a com plete-game shutout against the Min nesota Twins. When Ron Guidry returns to lorm in May after shoulder surgery, the Yankees will be set. Last season the Toronto Blucjays blew a 3 1/2-gamc lead during the season’s final week. This year George Bell again could put the Blucjays in championship contention. Bell, last season’s American League Most Valuable Player, will move from outfield to designated hitler this sea son. The switch angered Bell so much he refused a turn at bat during a spring training game. Bell was so disturbed about the move he pounded three home runs Tuesday in the Blucjays’ season opening 5-3 win against Kansas City. He hit 47 dingers last year and led the : TYPEWRITERS WORDPROCESSORS : RENTAL-SALES SERVICE BLOOMS 323 North 13th St. 474-4136 Typing $1 per page, fast, accurate Southeast Lincoln Kathy, 488-2948 WATCH YOUR FAVORITE MOVIES AT DUDS N’ SUDS Movie night every Thursday night with free popcorn. Look for those kind of numbers and a repeat of the MVP award from Bell this year, too. The Bluejays also return most of the pitchers from last year’s staff, which led the league with a 3.74 team ERA. Jimmy Key, the staff ace, led the team with a 2.76 ERA and picked up the win Tuesday. Tom Henke, whose 34 saves led the league last year, is excellent out of the bullpen. The Milwaukee Brewers finished third last year w ith a 91 - 71 record and they could finish there again this year if Paul Molitor stays healthy. But history has shown that is not likely. Molitor, who hit safely in 39consecu livc games last season, has not played more than 140 games in a season for 10 years. If veteran starter Doyle Alexander can continue his incredible performance down the stretch, the Tigers could be in the race come September. Detroit lost more than people think when they let Kirk Gibson go to Los Angeles. Gary Pettis is faster than Gibson, but he hit only .208 last year with 17 RBIs. Gibson hit 24 home runs last year. The Cleveland Indians and Balti more Orioles will likely wage a fierce war to stay out of the cellar — a war the Indians will probably lose. The Indians’ lineup isn’t too bad, but their pitching, like usual, is too bad. The Indians tried to help their woes by bringing 25 pitchers to spring train ing. Unfortunately, none of them was any good.
