Title wouldn’t surprise Stanford coach
By Richard Cooper
Staff Reporter
When Stanford finished third at
the 1986 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics
Championships in Lincoln, it sur
prised many people — even Cardinal
coach Sadao Hamada.
But at this year’s NCAA Champi
onships April 14-16attheBobDcva
ney Sports Center, Hamada said, it
should come as no surprise that the
Cardinal has their sights on winning
their first NCAA Gymnastics Cham
pionship in school history.
Hamada said the reason for his
optimism is that Stanford, 20-5 and
ranked sixth in the NCAA poll with a
282.26 scoring average, finished sec
ond to defending NCAA Champion
UCLA at the Pacific Ten Champion
ships last weekend in Los Angeles.
Hamada said if Stanford is in
eluded among the three squads that
earn berths in the team finals compe
tition April 16, the Cardinal have a
good shot of winning the NCAA tide
because all of their losses have been to
top-five teams. Stanford was 1-3
against UCLA and also dropped deci
sions to No. 1-ranked Illinois and
third-ranked Oklahoma this season.
Hamada said Stanford also has a
shotat winning the NCAA champion
ship because of seniors Randy Be
sosa, Mike Matzek and Chuck Ger
ardo. Besosa’s highest score in the all
around competition this season is
58.05, while Matzek and Gerardo
have tallied 57.7 and 57.5 scores.
Hamada said Bcsosa stands a good
chance of winning the individual all
around title because he has scored
above 57 all year. He said this
season’s team is Stanford’s best ever
because of Bcsosa, Matzek and Gcr
ardo.
“I think we have a very good team
because we have a lot of depth,”
Hamada said. “This year’s NCAAs
are going lobe very close because five
or six teams have a shot of winning it,
and we’re one of them.”
Hamada said Stanford will enter
this y ear’s competition as the top seed
from the West Region because UCLA
was plagued by injuries throughout
the season.
Hamada said if the Cardinal are to
win the NCAA Championship, they
will have to score 2-3 points higher
than Nebraska and Illinois. He said
the Cornhuskers are the favorites
entering the competition because
they have the home-floor advantage.
“I think we’re just as good as
UCLA, Nebraska and Illinois,”
Hamada said. “I think we can win.”
L.A. to dodge pennant chance in 1988

doesn’t look too much more promis
ing. Rick Mahler and Bruce Sutter are
the top men on the mound for Atlanta.
Big deal.
The Dodgers’ sink to bclow-avcr
age status was not helped by their 155
—:
errors last season. To make matters
worse, Los Angeles scored only 635
runs last year and the pitching staff
was never really there. It will be
missing again in 1988.
The predicted NL West finish:

Cincinnati 92-70 9
San Diego 75-87 26
