    Art exhibition/competition
displays creative energies
By Mick Dyer
Senior Reporter
Every spring, some of the best new
artwork on campus emerges from its
portfolio-nests to assemble with oth
ers of its kind.
The fifth annual Undergraduate
Competitive Exhibition, a collection
of some of the outstanding work of
University of Nebraska art students,
is on display in the UNL art depart
mentgallery, Richards Hall 102, until
April 6.
Competition is central to this
show. Art students may enter up to
three works they have completed
within the last academic year. Win
ners are selected by an objective ex
ternal judge.
Ree Schonlau, executive director
of the Bemis Project in Omaha,
judged the entries now on display.
She said the selection process can be
difficult when there is such variety to
choose from.
“What I was looking for was an
artist who is push ing the limits of their
style, who is being creative within
their media, who is trying to find their
own language or voice,” Schonlau
said.
She said all of the work on display
has a fresh quality that makes it stand
out
“Overall, I thought that it was a
successful exhibition,” she said. “I
hope the community and campus
support it.”
This year 86 people made 212
entries. The exhibition features 71
pieces by 51 artists. A wide variety of
styles, ranging from realism to surre
alism to abstract, in media ranging
from ceramics to acrylics to photo
graphs, are displayed.
The medley of works on display,
representative of the diversity of crea
tive energies present in the depart
ment, makes the collection especially
worth visiting.
Awards were given to some of the
exceptional entries.
