Region V is the northern Midwest region, encompassing all colleges and universities in the states of Michi gan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Mis souri, and including wcll-knowm film schools like the University of Chi cago and Northwestern University. Three films by UNL students are entered in the competition — Dan Hoffman’s experimental “When Dead Eyes Open,” and “Whose Kids Are These?” and “Milk and Honey,” both dramatic entries directed by David Stilwell. “Whose Kids” is a product of Wheeler Dixon’s Spring 1987 16 millimeter filmmaking course, while “Milk and Honey” and “Dead Eyes” were both done as inde pendent study projects (and self-fi nanced) by the directors. i ne eveni is sponsored oy me Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the “Oscar” folks), the Academy Foundation, and the Col gate-Palmolive Company. Regional winners in the categories of Animation, Documentary, Dra matic and Experimental will be sent on to Chicago to compete in regional semi-finals on April 16. Films win ning in the semi-finals will be sent on to Los Angeles and vote^ on by the Academy. The winning films wui be honored by the Academy at its Beverly Hills headquarters on June 7. Student filmmakers winning an overall cate gory will be flown to Los Angeles for a week and will also receive $1000 grants. Runners-up in each category will receive $500 grants. Screenings of the approximately 25 films, averaging about 15 minutes each, are at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. At the evening screening, refreshments will be served in Sheldon’s Great Hall during intermission. Because the fi nal entry deadline is Friday, an order of events has not yet been made up, but schedules and synopses will be available at the door.
