Green beer, corned beef and shamrocks
all part of legend of St. Patrick and his day
By Micki Haller »
Senior lulitor__
In the heyday of Christianity,
saints were almost as abundant as
chiseling televangelists are today.
Many saints have been forgotten or
even demoted, but a few are still
remembered.
For example: St. Patrick, Irish
saint and patron of green beer, corned
beef and cabbage and the shamrock.
But little is known about the man that /
legend has driving the snakes from »
Ireland.
According to Vol. 10 of the New
Catholic Encyclopedia, Patrick had a r
rough young adulthood. '
The son of an alderman in Roman
Britain, he was probably born in 389.
When he was 15, he committed an
undisclosed sin that later earned him
ecclesiastical censure 30 years later.
At the age of 16, Patrick was kid
napped by Irish raiders and sold as a .
slave in Ireland. He was a shepherd
for six years before he was encour
aged by a voice in his sleep to escape.
Patrick hitchhiked home on a ship,
but a desire to preach the Christian
laith to the Irish called him back to
the country of his enslavement.
Patrick’s superiors didn’t like the B
plan because Patrick had a defective Vi
education. But this did not stop the ,
man. Securing the protection of local
kings, he toured the country exten
sively and made numerous converts.
Patrick’s chief opponents were the
Druids and several members of the
British clergy.
Patrick was a man of action with
little inclination for learning. Voices
told him to escape from captivity,
called him to the Irish apostolate and
comforted him when in disgrace;
Patrick had much in common with
modern-day religious leaders.
Within two centuries of his death, j
a thriving cult had been established to
Patrick, and the many legends, such
as the expulsion of poisonous snakes
and his symbolization of the Trinity
by the shamrock leaf, were rife.
Patrick’s cult soon spread over
what is now France, Italy and Ger
many. When the Anglo-Normans |
established themselves in Ireland,
they took over the cult of St. Patrick
and other Irish saints.
With Irish emigration, the cult has
spread to many parts of the New
World. And that’s why Americans
everywhere dress up in green, gel
raucous and wear strange buttons |
saying “Kiss me, I’m Irish.”
Erin go braugh.
