thing I could do the rest of my life. 1
love to do it.”
Bryan said that every time he
moved up to a another level of diffi
culty, he had to change gymnasiums
to Icam new techniques. By the time
he was 10, Bryan was a member of the
Junior National Team.
Nebraska coach Francis Allen said
Bryan has the distinction of being on
the Junior National Team longer then
anyone else.
“He is one of those kids that grew
up in the gym,” Allen said.
Allen met Bryan for the first time
during a teaching clinic in Hubcrton,
Kan.
“Every time I went to Hubcrton to
teach a clinic, I would use Brad as my
demonstrator,” Allen said. ‘‘He was a
good demonstrator because healways
did everything right. So, ever since he
was a little kid, I’ve watched him
develop into a national-caliber gym
nast.”
Two years before he signed with
Nebraska, Bryan said, he moved to
Albuquerque to train in the same gym
as current teammate Ted Dimas.
Allen said Dimas and Bryan come
from the best gym in the country.
“Ed Birch, the coach down there,
is one of the best junior coaches in the
country,” Allen said. “He has several
kids that he coached that are on full
ride scholarships.”
Bryan said he wanted to attend
Nebraska ever since he watched the
Huskers win their second consecutive
NCAA Championship in 1980.
“Ever since 1 was 12 or 13 years
old, I’ve wanted to be a Nebraska
gymnast,” Bryan said. “I only took
one recruiting trip here, but when I
walked into this gym I knew right then
that this is where I wanted to com
pete.”
Allen said he knew Bryan would
help the Huskers out in his first year.
“When we recruited Brad, we
knew he was money in the bank,”
Allen said. “He can do two to three
events right now. He was a little weak
here and there, but he’s turned into a
fine college gymnast.
“He will definitely be a mainstay
on the team in the future,” Allen
added. “I set some goals for him at the
beginning of the season that I thought
he wouldn’t achieve until the end of
this year, and he’s already reached
those goals.”
Allen said Bryan’s graceful per
formances remind him of former
Nebraska gymnast Jim Mikus.
“He has a very beautiful motion
when he does his events, and Mikus
was the same way,” Allen said.
Bryan competed in the 1982 U.S.
Olympic Festival as a member of the
Junior National Team, but missed the
next two Festivals because of a frac
tured left ankle.
In last year’s Festival, Bryan fin
ished lied for 10th in the all-around
with Oklahoma gymnast Mike Chap
lin.
Bryan said he’s improved his
technique on all his events since he
came to Nebraska. He said he thinks
the Huskers have a good chance to
win the NCAA Championship.
‘‘We have two team leaders on this
team (Tom Schlesinger and Kevin
Davis) who I think could lead us to an
NCAA Championship,” Bryan said.
“I know I can handle the pressure
because the Lord Jesus Christ is right
by my side, so I know I can handle
anything.”
Allen said Bryan’s work habits are
excellent because he grew up in the
gym, and that devotion has helped
him improve as a gymnast.
“Brad is a good, hard worker,”
Allen said. “He doesn’t play around
when he’s in the gym. He comes in
and gets the job done, which I think in
the long run is going to pay off.”
Bryan said his main goal is to make
the 1992 U.S. Olympic team and help
Nebraska win a sixth national cham
pionship.
“I think every gymnast wants to
compete in the Olympics, because it’s
the ultimate meet,” Bryan said.
“While I’m here at Nebraska, I would
like to help us win several NCAA
Championships.
“I think if everybody stays healthy
that we could win a few.”
