Stus won in a time of 1:52.78, but Nebraska lost the dual to Iowa 109-108. Iowa throws water on 8-0 Husker record By Jeff Apel Senior Hditor and Mike Lange Slaff Reporter The only things that stood between the Nebraska men’s swimming team and an undefeated season were Iowa and .73 seconds. That’s the margin by which Iowa’s 400-yard relay team of Dave Kohmetschcr, John Linxwilcr, Todd Kellner and Dan Dumford defeated Nebraska’s Peter Williams, Rick Havekost, Mike Irvin and Dan Novinski. That victory, combined with a strong early performance that gave Iowa an 11-point lead, allowed the Hawkeycs to post a 109-108 victory against Nebraska Saturday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska backstroker Ed Jowdy said the loss was hard to take because it dropped the No. 9-ranked Com huskers’ record to 8-1. He said the loss was also difficult because it oc curred during Nebraska’s final dual meet of the season. “Losing by one point — that sucks,” Jowdy said. “I’d rather lose by 10.” Jowdy said it would be difficult for Nebraska to draw anything positive from the loss. He said the Huskers will have to put it behind them and con centrate on the the Big EightChampi onships March 3-5 in Lincoln. “It hurts — especially at home,” Jowdy said. “But at least we didn tget embarrassed.” Nebraska men’s swimming coach Cal Bentz also said the loss was hard to take. “If it’s OK to be disappointed in the score, I sure am,” Bentz said. Bentz said he entered the meet’s final relay with confidence. He said he thought Williams, Havekost, Irvin and Novinski could pull out the vic tory for Nebraska. But with the second-place finish in the relay and the consequent loss, Bentz said, some of the Huskers must realign their goals. He said the Ne braska swimmers who weren’t com peting at their desired levels need to sharpen their performances. “We just have to continue to move forward,” Bentz said. “We just have to keep on the plain.” Iowa men’s swimming coach Glenn Patton said he was pleased with the Hawkeye’s victory. He said the win was important because of the geographical rivalry between Iowa and Nebraska. Iowa took a 47-36 lead after the meet’s first five events with victories in the 400-yard medley relay, the 1000-yard freestyle and ihc 200-yard individual medley. Nebraska then used wins by Law rence Roddick in the 1- and 3-nricter diving competitions, Tom Stus in the 200-yard butterfly, Williams in the 100-yard freestyle and Sean Framp ton in the 200-yard breaststroke to lake a two-point lead. But the Hawkeyes used the clutch perform ance in the freestyle relay to post the victory. Patton said neither Iowa nor Ne braska could have asked for a better meet. Dual tie with Sooners, Northern Illinois loss gives coach optimism By Chuck Green Senior Reporter For the second year in a row, Nebraska’s wrestling team didn’t lose to Oklahoma. Before you shake your head and roll your eyes, consider that last season ’ s 25-16 Nebraska win was the first time since 1949 the Comhuskcrs beat Oklahoma in wrestling. Saturday’s 15-15 tie with the No. 4-ranked Sooners gave Nebraska coach Tim Neumann more optimism about his team than he’s had through out what he called a “disappointing season” last week. “I’m more happy with the way our guys wrestled against Oklahoma than with the result,” Neumann said. “They performed like they should have all year. It’s great that they quit saying what they ‘could have’ or ‘should have’ done and started doing what they can do.” The Huskers also defeated North ern Illinois 27-1 1 in the second half of their double-dual meet. Oklahoma then defeated Northern Illinois 49-6 in Saturday’s final dual.
