Pole vault encourages debate POLE VAULT from Page 8 they were able to provide funds for putting in the three-point rule in basketball. All three coaches agreed that pole vaulting is a dangerous event when it isn’t coached properly or the proper equipment isn’t used. All the coaches said pole vaulting is good for track in that it requires athletic skills and generates crowd enthusiasm. The coaches differed on whether the event should be banned in Nc braska. Loontjcr said the accident in Omaha was a fluke and all the talk about the event eventually will end. Bradley said there will be debates on dropping the event and he doesn’t want to be in the middle of it. He said smaller colleges in Nebraska would be hurt if the state dropped the event because they would have to start recruiting out-of-slale pole vaullcrs. But Knight and Kosmicki agreed there wou Idn ’ t be a dec I inc i f the state dropped the event, because there will always be more vaulters. i ! * TWO FAMOUS ! i 12” HOT HOAGIES I I Dine in, carry out or call delivery within service area. | * One coupon per order please. What was there for Nebraska’s wrestling team Friday night was gone Saturday. Neumann, Nebraska’s wrestling coach, had seen his No. Id-ranked Comhuskcrs defeat the University of Ncbraska-Omaha 27-11 Friday night at the UNO Ficldhouse. But Saturday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, the Huskers dropped a 21 -18 decision to Notre Dame, an unranked team. “It was a complete team break down,” Neumann said. “They weren’t half the team they were last night. The season’s almost over and we still don’tknow whatkind of team we’ve got. “Right now, it doesn't look very good,” he said. In the 118-pound weight class against Notre Dame, Nebraska’s Terry Cook lost to Andy Radenbaugh 10-5. The Huskers then took a 4-3 lead after a 15-2 major decision by Wallace Dawkins over Notre Dame’s Dave Smith at 126. At 134, Nebraska’s Dave Drocgemueller drew with Jerry Durso, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation at that class. “Terry Cook wrestled so unin spired it’s ridiculous, Neumann said. “At 134, we did very well, and in 142 and 150, we wrestled like we were out of shape.” At 142, Notre Dame’s Ron Wisniewski dccisioned Dave Rowe 11 -7, and the Fighting Irish extended their lead to 11-6 when Todd Layton defeated Nebraska’s Keenan Turner 8-7. Turncr is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation at that weight class. Jeff Coltvet defeated Notre Dame’s Mark Gerardi 9-5 at 158 and Nebraska’s Scott Chcnoweth beat Todd Tomazic 11-5 at 167. Despite Chenoweth’s victory, Neumann wasn’t satisfied with his performance on the mat. “Chcnoweth looked worse to night than he ever has before here at Nebraska,” he said. In the next match, at 177, Nebraska’s Tucker Thompson was pinned by Notre Dame’s Chris Gencser with 1:13 left in the third period. The fall gave the Fighting Irish a 17-12 lead with two matches remaining. At 190, Nebraska’s Sonny Manley lost to George Logsdon, and Joe Malacek, the Huskers’ heavy weight entry, won by disqualifica tion over Notre Dame’s Dominic Prinzivalli. Friday night, however, was a dif ferent story. Nebraska won five of its first six matches against the Maver icks, ranked No. 2 in Division II, and increased its dual win streak over UNO to 10. Nebraska’s performance against UNO was highlighted by Turner’s pin of Larry Thompson at 150 and Coltvet’s 7-5 decision over Division II All-America selection Brian Hil debrandtat 158. Nebraska’s loss to Notre Dame lowered the Huskers’ dual record to 6-8 this season. Neumann said he wasn’t optimistic of his team’s chances at the Big Eight Champion ships, which arc scheduled for March 6 in Norman, Okla., or at the nation als, which will be March 17-19 in Ames, Iowa. “The nationals are three days in a row, and you have to wrestle two matches a day,” Neumann said. “If they (the Huskers) can’t beat a Divi sion II team and then a non-rated team the next day, then we've got some problems.” Nebraska’s next meet is Saturday against Missouri at the sports center. The meet is scheduled for 2 p.m. -1 Surf's Ujj of Caftj'ornur Dockweiler Station, P.O. Box 18A506, Los Angeles, CA. 90007 Please send_T-Shirts4 $12.00 each or 3 shirts for $32 00.
