Nebraska wrestling coach Tim Neumann discusses strategy with Wallace Dawkins. Neumann says UNO no pushover for Cornhusker wrestlers tonight By Chuck Green Senior Reporter After facing six top- 10-ranked teams in January, Nebraska’s wres tling team is setting its sights on a Division II team Friday night. The only trouble is, the University of Nebraska at Omaha is rated second in the latest Division II poll. "It’s not getting that much easier,” Nebraska coach Tim Neumann said. "But we feel we should have an advantage over UNO because we’ve wrestled a little competition with the low as and the Iow a Slates.” The Mavericks have All-America selections in every weight class from 158 pounds to heavyweight. Of UNO's 10 starters, six are seniors, many of whom are fifth-year ath letes. Neumann said the Comhuskcrs can't afford to look past UNO to Notre Dame, whom they will face Saturday. The Fighting Irish, who were rated as high as No. 17 earlier this season, have “five really super wres tlers." Neumann said, but have a problem with depth. •TK.il V- k.w.r,.i„flk«,.... l ,.1.1, ,.. tuition,' NcimTann said. Because of iB name, Notre Dame is able to re cruit some “top-notch kids," he said. Notre Dame must give full scholar ships because of the high tuition, he said, whereas Nebraska can give half-scholarships and the students can afford the rest. Notre Dame still ects 12 scholarships like Nebraska, ho said, but it hurts them in depth. I hat means if one or two guys get hurt, they start to have some holes in their lineups,” he said. Nebraska may have a hole in its hnoup at the 126-pound weight class. ^ allace Dawkins pinched a nerve in his neck during practice Wednesday, hut Neumann said he doesn’t think Hawkins’ injury will keep him from competing this weekend. He’s a tough kid, and I expect him to do well,” Neumann said. yx-—1 South Padre Island March 18-27 $285 Bus Package (includes: 2 trips to Mexico) $185 Land Package (includes: 1 trip to'Mexico) nCALL Wipe Main Events Committe CAP East 472-1780 The key match against UNO should be at 158, between Nebraska’s Jeff Coltvct, w ho is 23-5 this season, and UNO’s Brad Hilde brand, 29-3. Coltvct and Hildebrand have met in four previous matches, Neumann said, and each match was decided by one or two points. Neumann said the key matches against Notre Dame will be between Nebraska’s Terry Cook and Andy Radcnbaughat 118,and the Huskers’ Dave Droegemucllcr against Terry Dursoat 134. Winning this weekend’s matches is important to Nebraska’s momen tum, Neumann said, with the Big Eight tournament scheduled for March 6 in Norman, Okla., and the NCAA Championships March 17-19 in Ames, Iowa. “Without putting any undue pres sure on the team, I think it's very important that we perform well and win these two duals this weekend," he said. "At this point of the season, we need to show people that our tough schedule helped us out this year." Nebraska, 5-7, is ranked No. 18 in th i s w eek ’ s A m a te u r W rest I ing Ne w- s coaches' poll. ‘‘I think they (the voters in the poll) felt that w ith our record, no one else could have finished better," Neumann said. Neumann said he’s looking lor improvements over last week’s 22 15 loss to No. 5-ranked Northern Iowa, particularly with physical conditioning among some team members. “We got more tired than I would * have liked in some of the weight classes against Northern Iowa,” Neumann said. Neumann said he hopes Nebraska wrestling fans will continue to sup port the team this weekend. Saturday against Notre Dame, the first KKI fans to the match will receive a free wrestling media guide, and the ticket stubs from the match will be good for a drawing for T-shirts and seat cox crs. Friday’s match against UNO will begin at 7 p.m. at the Omaha Field house, and Saturday’s meet is sched uled for 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Dcva ney Sports Center.
