■Athlete, non-athlete — all must work for an education GREEN from Page 10 know what sacrifice is. My doctor bills prove it. But what one must remember throughout this futile debate is that athletes, especially on the collegiate level, participate by choice. Sure, scholarships help w ith school’s many expenses, but if that’s why the indi vidual participates in a certain sport, complaints about lifting weights at incommodious hours of the morning shouldn’t be made. Athletes here at Nebraska do work hard and should be given much-de served credit for their efforts. But non-athlete students work just as hard — often much harder. “Some non-athletes may view our sports as fun and'recreationalthe same letter went on to say. “But to us, it’s much like a job—with an extreme amount of physical and mental drain.” Hey, there’s a simple solution — quit. If Husker athletes don’t like conditioning before the sun comes up or tedious practices after a long, hard day of classes — which, for some athletes I know, is a novelty — they shouldn’tdo itanymore. If they don’t like what they’re getting in return for playing games they love, they should do everything possible to dispose of their woe. My advice to these poor, misun derstood athletes is to go out and get a job (or two) and work 40 or 50 hours a week to pay for their education, room, food and books. Give school a try, like the rest of us, without the luxury of free tutors, academic coun selors and vacations from classes on those long road trips. And compare the glamour of bus ing tables to having fans cheer for your team and chant your name. Of course, some of the lesser recognized sports — such as cross country, swimming, track and wres tling — aren’t as noticed among Husker sports fans, and many of these athletes have a more justifiable argu ment. But the bottom line is this: Ath letes have it a lot better than some of them seem to think. If that isn’t enough, they should try something other than athletics. UNL’s support of the Pell Grant’s higher priority for student-athletes only provides fur ther support of the “pampered ath letes” allegations. Huskcr athletes work hard, and so do other UNL students. But when athletes have a chance to get even more through higher Pell Grant pri orities simply because they play a sport and can’t have a job, someone’s not working as hard as they should. Green is a junior news-editorial and criminal justice major and a Daily Nebras kan senior reporter. lOU coach hopes for her first win against Huskers SOONERS from Page 10 eric Good win-Colbcrt, and she’s done a super job,” Beck said. “They have had major upsets at Colorado and Kansas Slate. Their only loss was to Missouri, so they’ve had a great first half.” Beck said she has been impressed by Oklahoma forward Jo Moscly, who leads the Sooners with a scoring average of 15.2 points per game. She said she has also been impressed by point guard Margaret McKeon, who is an “excellent pcnctrator.” Beck said the Huskcrs must con tain Mosely and McKeon because the game against Oklahoma is impor tant. “It becomes one of the biggest of the year,” she said. ‘‘When you are 4 0 in the conference and in contention for the conference title, it becomes an extremely important road game.” FOR SALE 79“ G.E Color TV $55.12” Zenith Color TV $40.467-5189.
