Cornhusker team earns third place, $500 Trivia contest not trivial to UNL students By Mike Lange Staff Reporter Three University of Ncbraska Lincoln students who competed in a sports trivia contest picked up $ 1,500, a vast amount of knowledge and a little TV exposure during a trip to Haines City, Fla. Joseph Ryan, Scott Mazour and Chris Oerman earned a third-place finish in the “Superbowl of Sports Trivia” Jan. 4-8. The students quali fied for the contest and received $1,000 by winning a preliminary competition in December sponsored by the University Program Council. The competition, which matched 32 teams from across the country, consisted of four rounds. The first and second rounds con sisted of questions that were bound by a time limit, Ryan said. Each team was asked six questions in the third round. Ryan said the fourth round challenged the participants to answer as many questions as they could in 100 seconds. Nebraska earned a third-place fin ish in the competition by defeating Purdue 255-250 in the tournament’s first round and then “blew out” Slip pery Rock in the second, Ryan said. Even though they lost to Louisville in the third round the Comhuskers earned an automatic $500 for being among the tournament’s final eight teams. Ryan said he felt nervous entering the competition because the bright lights and cameras that ESPN used created an unfamiliar surrounding. The Nebraska-Purdue match will be shown on ESPN (cablechannel 23) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and will be repeated on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and Feb. 2 at 12:30 a.m. The Huskers’ match against Slippery Rock will be shown at 5:30 p.m. on April 8,12:30 a.m. on April 13 and 9:30 a.m. on June 25. Nebraska’s match against Louis ville will be shown at 5:30 p.m. on April 28, at 12:30 a.rn. on May 3 and at 9:30 a.m. on July 30. Ryan said although he gained a wealth of knowledge from the con test, he wouldn’t recommend com peting in it to other students. “I want to go back, so I’m not going to recommend it too hard,” Ryan said.
