Former Busker may run in Olympics GEORGE from Page 10 When George, w ho is from Lagos, Nigeria, arrived at Nebraska, the competition level was a little too tough for him, Pepin said. “I encouraged (George) to go to school at Wichita because he had a better chance to compete at that level,” Pepin said. “He tried real hard in athletics and academics here, and I knov/ he’s done a good job (at W ich i ta State) and helped their team. He’s also done real well academically down there.” Komclson said the Shockers were pleased to hear that George wanted to transfer. “Gary Pepin called me to see if we were interested,” Komclson said. “We definitely were.” George, a senior, said there was no single reason he decided to transfer to Wichita State. But he said the transfer was good for him. “I’m really glad I did transfer,” George said. “1 just found myself in Wichita.” Komclson said George has ad justed to American collegiate compe tition and has excelled in the past two seasons. Kornelson said George, who won the Missouri Valley Conference 400 mctcr dash indoor championship last year, is even better this season. George ran a 21.9 in the 200 and a 6.3 in the 55 in practice this season. “This is by far his best year,” Kor nelson said. “He’s just kind of settled into things. He’s just more comfort able with training and everything else.” George competed in the 55 in Saturday’s quadrangular at the Bob Devaney Sports Center between Ne braska, Barton (Kan.) County Col lege, Drake and Wichita State. He won his trial heat in 6.43 seconds, but finished second with a 6.40 to Nebraska’s Mark Perry in the finals. George scratched out of the 300 after he pulled a muscle in his right leg in the 55 finals. George said he ran middle-dis tance races at Nebraska, but he now likes sprinting better. He said he has no hard feelings against either Pepin or Nebraska. “I really liked him,” Pepin said. “He’s a nice guy and I really enjoyed having him here.” George said the main differences between Nebraska and Wichita State arc the weather and training facilities. “(Nebraska’s) facilities are a lot better,” George said, “but I think we have some good things to work with in Wichita, too. Also.it’salotwarrnerin Wichita.” George said he may compete in the 1988 Olympics for Nigeria. “It depends on how my indoor and outdoor seasons go,” George said.
