Husker women win gymnastics triangular By Lori Griffin StaffRcporter Depth and experience were vital as the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team broke the 184-point barrier en route to defeating Missouri and Michigan Saturday night in a triangu lar meet at Columbia, Mo. Nebraska scored 184.7 points, to Missouri’s 182.5 and Michigan’s 177.8. “We just did an outstanding job,” Comhusker women’s gymnastics coach Rick Walton said. “We had some scoring from injured people, and our experienced girls did quite well.” Nebraska junior Jcancanc Smith finished third in the all-around com petition, compiling a 37.05 total. She also finished fourth in the vault and balance beam competitions. Husker sophomore Michelle Bryant, who is coming back Irom a shoulder injury, finished second on the balance beam with a 9.5. Nebraska’s Racine Smith finished in a tic for fifth place in the floor exercise with sophomore teammate Angie Burdette. Both gymnasts scored 9.1 in the event. Nebraska’s Crystal Savage was the lone event winner for the No. 9-ranked Huskers, as ;hc won the uneven bars competition with 9.65. Walton said he was pleased with the performance of freshman Lisa McCrady. McCrady tied Jeancanc Smith for third place in the vaulting competition and also finished third in the floor exercise with a 9.35. McCrady then finished fourth in the uneven bars competition to com pile a 36.85 score in the all-around competition. Walton said Nebraska should con tinue to be dominate in future meets because several Huskers suffering from shoulder injuries are gaining strength and making comebacks. Tami Bair competed in the floor exercise and scored a 9.05 despite a shoulder injury. Jane Clemons, who is also suffering from a shoulder injury, will be back in the lineup in either late February or early March, Walton said. Walton said Bair and Bryant com peted so they could prepare to face No. 11 Oklahoma and defending national champion Georgia on Jan. 31 in Nor man, Okla. Walton said Nebraska knows it can compete with anybody. He said the Huskcrs proved it by defeating Mis souri, which has one of its best teams in its history this year. The Tigers claimed first and sec ond place in the all-around competi tion. Missouri freshman Julie Dorn won the event with a 37.45, followed by junior Mary Houghton with a 37.3. Buchanan said the Huskcrs arc ready for the challenge. “We’ve felt all year that we could match up better against Iowa State than with the rest of the conference,” he said. “That included Missouri. We were more worried about them.” “The win was real important,” Nee said. “It gives us the belief that we can be competitive at home.
