The 1983 movie is based on a Japanese legend. In an isolated, impoverished village, elders reaching the age of 70 are customarily abandoned on a moun tain top to meet the gods of Nar ayama. Orin, a matriarch who is approaching 70, must save her family while stolen crops and newborns add to the various prob lems. She overcomes these adver sities, but still insists that her reluc tant son take her to Narayama. “The Ballad of Narayama” won the Grand Prize at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival. The final film in the series is on Feb. 18. “The Family Game,” di rected by Yoshimitsu Morita, is a comedy about a boy who has gone through many tutors, but finally meels his match in a tutor who keeps him off balance, ridicules him and sometimes slaps him around. According to a New York Times reviewer, the film is not always easy to follow, but is almost always funny.
