Loss not comparable to prices in Vegas
LAS VEGAS from Page 6
We never found Elvis. “Earl”
did sneak up in the balcony at the
Hilton long enough to see Wayne
Newton tell a bad ethnic joke, but
then he got kicked out by a weight
lifter in a white tux.
Luckily, the six of us only lost
$700. That’s more than any of us
ever see in a month or two, and the
approximate GNP of many small
Third World nations, but let’s keep
things in proper perspective. At the
Ncimann-Marcus discount outlet,
just down the block from Caesar’s
Palace, right there in the middle of
the Strip, 700 bucks won’t even get
you both parts of an alpaca-fur
bikini, so it’s not like we lost all
that much.
Unfortunately for us, however,
it was all we had.
And so, like the gentle old
woman in the parable, after giving
all we had, we set off for Los
Angeles with nothing but hope,
prayer and a Texaco card.
I could tell you of the things we
did in the City of Angels. I could
tell you of the fun we had. I could
tell you how we saw Chuck Norris
hacking out his new movie on the
Santa Monica Pier. I could tell you
how wc ate at All-America Burger,
where Brad from “Fast Times at
Ridgemont High” worked. I could
tell you how truly grateful the six of
us were that Texaco stations in
every Western stale sell beer and |
burritos, and what that diet does to
your health after a week, but these
are other stories, to be told another
time. My grandchildren won’t be
lieve me, and like every generation
in its youth, they’ll probably have
to go and find out the evils of life
for themselves.
I’d wish them luck, but that’s
what every dealer in Vegas told us.

Pretension: what L.A.’s all about
L.A. from Page 7
Everyone in L.A. seems to be
lost, still searching for something
to be found in the subtropical heat
that never existed in their homes in
the Midwest or back East. In the
immortal words of U2, they still
haven’t found what they’re look
ing for. And as you watch the
people driving to nowhere, stop
ping in suburbs that blend to
gether, try to overlook the futility
of it all and enjoy the sights.
Pretension is what L.A. is all
about. Everyone is living out a
fantasy here, so there’s no point in
trying to analyze the place. Just get
in the car and become a voyeur.
Drive down to the heart of
Hollywood to witness the epitome
of the California dreamer: Ange
lyne. Angclyne is a bleach-blonde
glamour girl who always wanted to
be a star, but she had no connec
tions and no talent, so her boy
friend spent $50,000 and had her
likeness painted on the side of one
of Hollywood’s few tall buildings.
Although Angclyne finally landed
a role in the film “Earth Girls Are
Easy,” she has been famous for
absolutely nothing the past two
years.
The main thing you will notice
about Hollywood is that it is hardly
the pristine dream mecca people
say it is. Hollywood is somewhat
uirty and sordid, but it’s supposed
to be that way, isn’t it? Cruise
down Hollywood Boulevard and
witness the infamous hookers —
would-be Angelynes with no tal
ent — who came to Tinseltown to
become stars, but didn’t have the
50 grand needed to put up bill
boards of themselves.
Amble along the Walk of Fame
and witness apotheosis personi
fied: star-shaped cement shrines of
celebrities who were famous
enough to have their names
dropped on the sidewalk for eter
nity. Who needs gossip columns
with names dropped in boldface
