The children looked at another
piece of sculpture — a small un
titled abstract piece. Almost im
mediately, they determined that it
was a person standing on his head.
Several of the students tried to
imitate the sculpture by standing
on their own heads.
Raglin showed the students
various paintings.
“Seed Com,” a colorful draw
ing-painting by William Willy,
was popular with the students.
They observed many symbols
within the work, including a kite

and a sword. They also speculated
on how the artist was able to create
the swirling maelstrom of color in
the painting.
“I think he threw some paint on
the canvas and smeared it around
with a rag,” a girl with short brown
hair said.
But the group was uncertain
what effect the artist intended the
painting to have.
The group of students made
some fairly astute observations
about the art they saw. For in
stance, they were surprised by a
painting of the New York skyline
at night by Georgia O’Keefe.
“That’s not like her style at all,”
one student said. “Usually she
paints things real close.”
The group enjoyed looking at a
romantic-era landscape by Albert
Bierstadt entitled “River Land
scape.” The students pointed out a
faint image of a deer wading in the
river that the artist had painted
over. Raglin had never seen that
part of the painting before.
“I’ll have to bring that to the
attention of the gallery director,”
she said.
The students were amazed by
an untitled painting of some pieces
of mail against a white background
by Paul Sarkisian. Raglin ex
plained that it was an example of
“fool-thc-eye” realism. They were
not easily convinced that it was a
painting.
“Look at where the letter is torn
and wrinkled,” a boy with a crew
cut said. “How can an artist do
that?”
But after careful examination
the group agreed that it was, in
deed, a painting.
