Butch Ireland/Daily Nebraskan Oti Bird range set at park By Brent Hintz and Mick Dyer Staff Reporters More than 236 documented spe cies of birds make their homes throughout the year at the Chet Ager Nature Center in Pioneers Park. Some of the birds, including birds of prey, waterfowl and songbirds, make only brief stops on long migratory jour neys. Mabel Ott is the nature center’s resident bird-watching expert. Ott has banded more than 165 different spe cies of birds as a federal bird bander. She said people of all ages and physi cal abilities can watch birds. “Bird watching can take as much time and effort as you want,” she said. People can watch birds anywhere, with only a pair of binoculars and a field-guide, she said. People watch birds for a variety of reasons. Some just want to look at birds. Others get more involved, iden tifying birds and studying habitat and behavior. Many bird watchers keep life-lists of every species of bird they have observed, she said. Ott said Nebraska’s centralized location makes it an exceptional re gion for bird watching. Many migrat ing birds travel through the state twice a year. Birds inhabiting primarily the western or eastern regions of the United Slates are often seen in Ne braska. Canadian geese are currently the main attraction at the center. Flocks of geese take off and land near small ponds at the 58-acre center during the morning and early evening hours. Geese can be observed throughout the day from a “nature lodge.” The center sponsors tree nature walks at 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Groups of eight or more can make arrangements for bird watching tours with a guide at the center by calling 471- 7895. The center will sponsor “A Wood Fleetwood Mac cancels concert The Fleetwood Mac concert, scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Omaha Civic Auditorium, has been cancelled.
