Media passes
cause problems
By Kyle Schurman
Staff Reporter
The media craze generated by
Saturday’s game between No. 1
ranked Nebraska and No. 2-ranked
Oklahoma has generated major prob
lems for the Nebraska sports informa
tion department.
Nebraska sports information direc
tor Don Bryant said 80 spaces are
avai lable in the press box for members
of the media. But, he said, press re
quests exceeded that number a month
ago.
“We’ve got problems,” Bryant
said.
Bryant said more than 100 newspa
pers have requested passes, including
more than 60 major dailies and about
40 smaller papers throughout Ne
braska and the Midwest.
He said priority was given to pa
pers that print a Sunday edition, be
cause their reporters will have to send
in stories on Saturday night.
Bryant said the sports information
department won’t know until Satur
day morning where it isgoing toputall
of the media. He would not confirm
the department is planning to put some
of the media in the Hewitt Center with
a big-screen television or on the side
lines.
“We’re looking at alternatives on
all things,” Bryant said.
The number of media requests for
Saturday’s game is similar to last
year’s Fiesta Bowl between then-No.
1-ranked Miami and No. 2*rankcd
Penn State, he said.
Although the Comhuskers and the
Sooners were ranked No. 1 and No. 2
in 1971, this game is different because
it will be played in Lincoln.
“In ’71 it was there, so it was
Oklahoma’s headache,” Bryant said.
Bryant said the department has
scheduled extra press conferences
with Nebraska coach Tom Osborne.
But players will only be available on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as
they have been all season, Bryant said.

Sooners’ funeral rites
scheduled for Saturday
This Saturday, whenever the Ne
braska defense takes the field, I will
not be dressed in red.
You don’t wear red to a funeral.
And that is what Nebraska football
Jans will be attending this Saturday: a
funeral for the Oklahoma Sooners.
Hut this won’t be the first demise of a
team we will have witnessed. The
Blackshirts have tolled the bell for
nine other teams. On Saturday, the
band will be playing yet another
dirge.
So, whether you are at the stadium,
your tavoritc bar or at home watching
the game, whenever our defense takes
the field to bury Oklahoma, remem
ber to wear black. Anything will do: a
shirt, a hat or arm band. Just wear
something black and show some re
spect for the deceased.
We’ll celebrate later.
