Fund A fee refunds up from last semester By Lisa Twiestmeyer Staff Reporter The controversy surrounding the Gay/Les bian Programming Committee may have caused an increase in the number of Fund A refunds this semester, Vice Chancellor of Stu dent Affairs James Griesen said. The number of Fund A refunds for this semester increased to402, up from 353 last year at this time. Fund A is part of the Program and Facilities Fee that each student pays along with tuition. Students enrolled in seven or more credit hours must pay $111, which is divided into Fund A and Fund B. Fund A money, $7.02 per student this se mester, is divided among three student-run groups — the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, the University Pro gram Council and the Daily Nebraskan. Stu dents may ask for an entire Fund A refund or just the money allocated to a specific organiza tion at the beginning of the semester. Fund B is used to finance services such as the University Health Center and the Nebraska unions. Fund B is non-refundable. Griesen said the increase in refunds this semester may have resulted from a letter to the editor printed in the DN on the last day refunds were available. The letter urged students to request refunds and incorrectly said that UPC would use part of the money to finance the Gay/ Lesbian Programming Committee. The Gay/ Lesbian Programming Committee receives no UPC money, but may co-sponsor programs with other UPC committees. Griesen said the letter may have been the reason for the increase in UPC refunds, which were up from 303 last year to 393 this semester. Barb Meister, UPC executive board coordi nator, also said the letter was probably a reason for the increase. But the increase should not cause a problem, she said. “I don’t think it will drastically affect any one program,” Meister said. Dan Shattil, DN general manager, said the newspaper would not be affected by its 372 refunds, up from 310 last fall. “It amounts to only a .02 percent change in our budget, so I don’t think it will have much of an impact,” Shattil said. Marlene Beyke, AS UN director of develop ment, said she is concerned every year at Fund A refund time. She said students need to realize the services they cannot use if they receive their refunds, such as free student legal services and UPC-sponsored programs. “We hope each year that we can make it so that students don’t want to get the refund,” she said. The number of students requesting refunds of the AS UN portion of F ind A was 374, up from 343. Griesen said the increase this year does not indicate any trend. “Issues can make the figures go up and down,”Griesen said. “The material effect is not that significant.” Geography week fights ignorance By Sharon Miller Staff Reporter Ninety-five percent of American college freshmen could not locate Vietnam on a world map, according to statistics reported by Congress in January 1987. So Congress designated this week as National Geography Awareness Week, and the University of Ne braska-Lincoln geography depart ment is taking part in this nationwide effort along with schools in more than 30 states. “The purpose of the Geography Awareness Week is to alert the Ameri can public, particularly students, with regard to increasing illiteracy about geography,” said Dean Rugg, UNL geography professor. An ignorance of geography and the inability of geographers to promote their programs is eliminating some geography departments and making geography look expendable, Rugg said. The University of Pittsburgh, Uni versity of Michigan and Northwestern University have eliminated geogra phy departments. Students need to know more about the concepts of geography, not just places and locations, Rugg said. When people understand the way cit ies regionalize, they can understand if their city is in good shape economi cally, he said. In recognition of geography week, UNL’s geography department will sponsor an open house Thursday from 7 to 10p.m. on the third floor of Avery Hall. Glenn E. Schweitzer, former direc tor of environmental monitoring for the Environmental Protection Agency, will talk about the incidents at Love Canal and Three Mile Island nuclear power plants. Schweitzer will talk from 8 to 9 p.m. in Avery 201. The department will present dem onstrations and displays on computer and weather mapping, remote sens ing, satellite photography, geographic research, teaching applications and geographic illiteracy. Plumbing repairs creating hassles for Fedde residents WATER from page 1 of the pipes began Monday. Zatechka said the water has not been off continuously since the problem began. Workers have turned water on and off because they were patching the old water pipe while waiting for the new pipes to arrive. Kim Grant, a senior home eco nomics and education major, said her roommate, Leslie Clausen, a senior elementary education ma jor, was locked out of Burr Hall early one morning last week after she left the building to shower. Clausen stood ouLside in her paja- ■*— mas for 15 minutes, from 5:45 to 6 a.m., w aiting for the security guard to return from his rounds and un lock the door. Beth Boswell, a senior business education major, said her window overlooks the workers. Monday, as she looked out her window, only one worker was working, she said. He had his dog with him in the truck. “I don’t know if the dog was helping or not,” Boswell said.
