Brian Barber/Daily Nebraskan Syracuse, Notre Dame among picks for game with Big Eight Champion BOWL from Page 8 year, will be on Nov. 21 when they face Florida. Adams said the surprise team in this year’s Orange Bowl race is Syracuse, which has rolled to a 9-0 record behind senior quarterback Don McPherson. Syracuse coach Dick MaePherson said McPherson resembles Nebraska quarterback Steve Taylor. “Don is a lot like Steve Taylor. The only difference is Taylor is younger,” MaePherson said. “But I like every thing they do at Nebraska, Tom Osborne and the whole NU package. We try to modelizc our program after Nebraska’s. Nebraska is one of the most consistent football teams from year to year.” MaePherson said he knows what Syracuse will have to do to cam an Orange Bowl bid. “I have no opinion on the bowls, but to get to any bowl we will have to be 11 -0 and will have to fight like hell to get to that position,” MaePherson said. “It has been our philosophy all year that we have nine games down and one to go.” MaePherson said he expects an outstanding game between Nebraska and Oklahoma. He said the loser may not be the poorer team. “Whoever wins that game might not be the best team, but just happens to be better that day,” MacPhcrson said. “Both the Nebraska and Okla homa football programs are great for college athletics.” Adams said No. 9-ranked Notre Dame has an outside chance of earn ing an Orange Bowl bid. He said the chances of the Fighting Irish are hin dered because they must face Ala bama on Saturday and Miami on Nov. 28. Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz said his team is also hampered by injuries. “We have seven starters out on offense right now, so each and every week they have to play exceptionally well,” Holtz said. “It has been difficult with losing our starting quarterback and our starting free safety. “On defense we have not started the k amc defensive line in the last six games.” Holtz said he hasn’t been thinking about a possible bowl bid. “We can’t control receiving a bow I bid an awful lot,” Holtz said. “No way arc we thinking about a bowl bid. Right now, the only thing we arc thinking about is to beat Alabama.” Holtz said Oklahoma and Ne braska are impressive teams. “My only opportunity to see both teams has been on television,” Holtz said. “They are both incredible foot ball teams. The way they look on total offense and defense is that they arc two great football teams.” Adams said the 7-1 Fighting Irish need to win all of their remaining games to receive a bowl bid. Adams said if Nebraska and Okla homa lie or the Comhuskers beat Oklahoma and then lose to Colorado on Nov. 28, a rematch between Ne braska and the Sooners might be pos sible. “In case of a tie, the Orange Bowl has the prerogative to pick the school they want to represent the Big Eight,” Adams said. “The team that faces the Big Eight champion all depends on what other team is available at the time. It also depends on rankings and other teams in the nation. But rc to Adams said the Orange Bowl wants to stage the national champion ship game.
