• Andrea Hoy/Daily Nebraskan Nebraska's Joe Sims prepares to tackle a St. Thomas (Minn.) opponent earlier this season. 2-2 Husker freshmen seek to avoid record-breaking third loss 'infamy' By Steve Sipple Staff Reporter Nebraska freshman football coach Shane Thorell said he has had enough of history books. The 2-2 Comhuskcrs made his tory last Thursday night with their 49-14 loss to Coffeyvillc (Kan.) Junior College by becoming the second Nebraska freshman team in 30 years to lose two games in a season. The 1957 team, coached by Dick Monroe, finished 0-2. Thorell said he doesn’t even want to think about the possibility of losing three games this season. A loss to Waldorf would make the Huskers, who also dropped a 21 -19 decision to Air Force earlier this year, the first freshman team in Nebraska history to lose three games in a year. “I’ve already made history,’’ Thorell said. “I don’t want to go down in infamy.’’ The Huskers will try to avoid ‘‘infamy’’ when they conclude their season today against Waldorf (Iowa) Junior College at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Thorell said Waldorf’s wish bone offense is a challenge for Nebraska because of its hurry-up style. He said the Warriors send a center and a receiver to the line of scrimmage before every play while the quarterback calls the play in the huddle. Then the quarterback ap proaches the center and takes the snap when everybody is set — without calling a snap count. Waldorf coach David Bolstorff said the offense often confuses opposing teams. “It makes and keeps the offense rather aggressive,” Bolstorff said. “It’s worked out rather well for us.” The Warrior wishbone attack has averaged 432.4 yards a game this season, including an average of 348.5 rushing. Waldorf’s de fense has given up an average of 330 yards a game. Waldorf’s offense will force the Huskcrs to simplify their defense, Thorcll said. “A lot of times we’ll go into a game with a few more defenses,” Thorell said. ‘‘If a team comes out with a certain offense we may make a check call and change our whole defense. With this team we try to keep things as simple as possible.” Waldorf will show a variety of defenses, Thorcll said. He said the Warriors’ various formations both ered the Huskcrs last year in Nebraska’s 13-3 victory. In that game, Nebraska accumulated 299 yards but could only manage first and fourth-quarter touchdowns. ‘‘They don’t line up in the same defense loo much,” Thorell said. ‘‘Last year they caused us a lot of problems because they brought a lot of people. We’ll see a lot of different looks.” The 6-3 Warriors have been led by freshman quarterback Pat Jackson, who leads the team with 799 yards rushing and has scored a team-high 14 touchdowns. He rushed 16 times for 63 yards and completed four of 12 passes for 48 yards in the Warriors’ 10-6 victory over Iowa Central Community College Saturday. Freshman running back Billy Williams also has helped the War riors’ ground attack. Williams, from Woodbury, N.J., has rushed 103 times for 646 yards — an average of 6.3 yards a carry. Wil liams attended Nebraska last sea son but couldn’t play because he didn’t meet the academic stan dards set by Proposition 48. Nebraska running back coach Frank Solich said the Huskers have remained in contact with Williams this season. “I think he’s planning on com ing back,” Solich said. “But he’s got to prove himself academically as well as on the football field before he does.” Thorell said Tom Haase, a walk-on from Aurora, will start at quarterback for the Huskers. He started his first game of the season last week against Coffeyville and completed eight of 22 passes while throwing three interceptions. For the season Haase has completed 11 of 29 for 171 yards. He has also rushed 11 times for 14 yards. Thorell said Kcithcn McCant, who started Nebraska’s first three games at quarterback, won’t start against Waldorf because he of a sore shoulder. Thorell said Haase has come back strong after a below-par per formance at Coffeyville. “He’s a good competitor,” Thorell said. “He did some really good things at Coffeyville. The whole team had some bright spots. We just had a bad night against a good team.” “Coffeyville might be the best team the freshmen have played. Since I’ve been here, Coffeyville is the best we’ve played. I wish the record was different, but in the long run this season will help the play ers.” Thorell said offensive tackles Eric Wiegert and Ray Reifenrath probably won’t play today.
