Actors of'Born to Lose' talk about film, careers while at UNL museum By Terie Clement Staff Reporter Actor David Sherrill turns 25 Nov. 8. He looks the college part — he could be the guy across the row in Western Civilization 100. But instead, Sherrill is one of the actors filming “Bom To Lose,” now being filmed on location in Morrill Hall on the University of Nebraska Lincoln campus. The film’s Morrill Hall scenes is about the three leading characters, from an all girls college, while on a visiting a museum on a field trip. The film’s leading male characters have been pursuing them, and finally get their attention at the museum. About 6 feet tall with spiked blonde hair and blue eyes, Sherrill wore a sleeveless white T-shirt, blue jeans with several strategically placed holes and cowboy boots. He looked worn out as he relaxed, holding a chambray work shirt over his shoulder. “In this scene I’ll be wearing a shirt, but my character has a tattoo on his left arm,” Sherrill pointed to bruise-like black marks on his bicep. Sherrill said he was called in at the last minute for the part of T-Bone, a member of a biker gang. T-Bone has a Texas accent. “I took a look at the part and thought he could be a good old boy,” he said, “I’ve know a lot of them and a few guys on the crew arc Texan. You know how they talk,” he said, eyes and hands moving enthusiastically. “Moowiec bceino- senior!” Sherrill said the accent also sepa rates him from the two other male leads, John D’Aquino and Vito Rug mis, who are both tall and dark. “The first part of the movie I have long, blonde hair, a bandanna and moustache. The moustache really itched. To keep from scratching it I found myself smoothing it with my thumb and forefinger.” Sherrill said. “The scene we’re shooting here is the first time you see our characters clcancd-up.” he said. “It’s harder to act the part without the wig and stuff. I have to keep aware of the manner isms.” He motions with his hands. “1 continue to smooth my moustache even when it’s gone, out of habit.” Sherrill is from Denver but now lives in Los Angeles. He attended Colorado Slate until 1983 when he said his growing interest in acting look him to New York. “I got a little cocky in college,” he said. “My reviews were good and I was bought in.” Sherrill said his parents weren’t happy about his move. “1 don’t have a degree, but in acting, a degree is only a certificate to teach.” Sherrill appeared as “Bud” on the soap opera “All My Children.” "Bud was a high school friend in (ireg and Jenny’Sgroup,” he said. “He even went to Pine Valley College a few months before a I left. The time had just come.” “The Wraith,”a film nowon video, and “The Night Before,” set to be released this spring, arc recent pro ductions that Sherrill has been in. “I just got back from Israel where I was filming ‘Beast of War’ where I play a Soviet gun-ship pilot,” Sherrill said. “It’s a switch to be here. In Israel, I was shooting in a helicopter at 125 degrees. The second day I was here, it snowed.” He said that his 3 1/2 weeks in Nebraska have been “pretty quiet.” “I’m just used to smog and traffic, there’s nothing like that here,” he said. “It’s relaxing, but I’m excited to get back home to my own lifestyle.” “I’ll never get sick of acting. I like it too much. I enjoy writing scripts. Some day I’m sure I’ll be doing that, but I’d never want to direct....” The scene is what D’Aquino, the male lead, referred to as the “wooing scene.” The three male characters have followed the girls on their field trip and get their attention while in the museum. “Action!” someone shouts. “The male’s thorax swells with a deep, dark tone . . . they arc one in dinosaur . . .” the actress playing a museum tour guide recited her lines on the mating habitsof some unknown prehistoric creature. The speech drew sn ickers from onlookers and cast alike each time it was given. The six leads including D’Aquino, Ruginis, Sherrill, Michelle Johnson, Anastasia Fielding, and Kristen Kauffman, posed under a huge prehis toric rhino exhibit. Between takes they chatted and laughed. “I think she goes ... and I go .. “Anastasia, you could move a little closer to Fritz (D’Aquino)?” the di rector called. “Okay, action!” Another “Cut!” The actors and actresses wandered off the set. Actress Michelle Johnson steps away from the scene. Johnson said she was excited when she was offered the part in “Bom to Lose.” “I liked it because it was a dramatic, serious role. The viewers really can’t tell if I’m good or bad. I have to keep that question in their minds.” Johnson said that she will be in “Wax Work,” a film coming out next April. D’Aquino, who’s tall and has dark curly hair and strange green-blue eyes, walks away from the set as a scene is completed. The 29-year-old actor recounted his acting experiences for me. “1 was in a Western pilot series, ‘Wild Side,’ that played against ‘Cosby,’ so it lasted about 12 min utes,” he said and then laughed.
