Pettit: Nebraska, Texas have similar style By Mark Derowitsch Senior Reporter When Texas faces Nebraska in volleyball this weekend, the two teams will be using a similar de fense, said Nebraska volleyball coach Terry Pettit. “They arc probably very similar to Nebraska,” Pettit said. “Texas is very strong and their strength is in their hitters. And they don’t beat themselves.” The Longhorns, 15-7 and ranked No. 13 nationally, will face Nebraska Friday and Saturday nights in Austin, Texas. Both matches begin at 7:30 p.m. Texas coach Mick Haley dis agreed with Pettit. “I think Nebraska’s areal physi cal team, while Texas has been more of a Finesse team,” Haley said. “I think that’s why we beat Nebraska last year in Lincoln. It was to our advantage to go to a five game match, but I’m not so sure if it would be to our advantage to go five sets with them.” The Huskers, 24-1 and No. 6 nationally, are coming off a 15-7, 8-15, 15-7, 15-4 win against Kan sas State Tuesday night in Manhat tan, Kan. Pettit said playing the Wildcats on the road will help Nebraska against Texas. “Any time you gain experience in a potential hostile environment it helps you prepare for a team like Texas,”Pettitsaid.“KansasState’s crowd was loud, and I imagine it will be the same in Texas. “Texas’ gym is similar to what we have here. It’s an older building like the (NU) Coliseum. And we are very comfortable playing in gyms similar to ours.” Pettit said playing the Long horns will help Nebraska prepare for the Big Eight Tournament and the national tournament. “Texas has been a strong team for several years,” Pettit said. “They finished tied for third at nationals last year and fifth two years ago. Playing a team of that caliber will help us.” Haley said Texas would also benefit from the match. “Every time you play a quality team I figure it makes you better,” Haley said. “Nebraska is a good team and they’re rated in the top 10. We play eight of the top 10 teams, so it’s got to make us bet ter.” The Longhorns’ leading hitters are Karen Kramer and Dawn Dav enport. Kramer has recorded 213 kills for a hitting percentage of .377, and Davenport has recorded 231 kills this year. Haley said the hitlers comple ment each other. “Dawn’s the highest point pro ducer we have, while Karen docs a j few more things and is more intimi dating,” Haley said. “But Dawn docs so many things well. She’s a complete player.” r n I HAPPY FRANK SEZ: GOOD LUCK HUSKERS! I THICK SHAKES 99$ NACHO MELT $1.09 FOOTLONG with chili & cheese $1.50 SLOPPY JOES g 99<t ^ OPEN UNTIL 1:00 A.M. 1320 FRI. &. Bentz said although the Huskers used Friday’s Big Eight Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., to determine who would be included on their travel ros ter, the intra-squad meet will still be important because Nebraska will be swimming its second and third events. He said that should make for an inter esting meet. “We expect to see some really competitive races,” Bcntz said. “It’s a meet we put together to see some good competition.” Bentz said that the meet will also help Nebraska gain momentum for its Louisiana trip.ThcHuskers will travel to Baton Rouge, La., on Nov. 13 to face Louisiana Slate and then will face Tulane on Nov. 14 in New Orleans. Reed 'couldn't turn down' chance to be Comhusker By Nick Hodge Staff Reporter Throughout most of his career at Valley Christian High School in Seal Beach, Calif., Nebraska freshman kicker Lane Reed said he didn’t want to play football. Reed, a walk-on who defeated fel low Nebraska kicker Phil Mendoza for the starting kicking job, said he didn’t intend to play college football until the Cornhuskers asked him to walk on late in his high-school career. He said the offer quickly changed his mind because it was one he couldn’t refuse. “I didn’t really want to play foot ball,” Reed said. “But when I got the chance to play here with such a great program I couldn’t turn it down.” Reed said the walk-on process he experienced was different than the route most players take. He said Nebraska coaches first expressed in terest in him after his father, who was in the state on a business trip, showed newspaper clippings that highlighted his career to Nebraska recruiting coordinator Dave Gillespie. Reed said Gillespie told his father to send a film back to Lincoln, and shortly after that he was asked to walk on. Reed, an all-league performer in football, soccer and track who also was named the co-athlete of the year as a senior at Valley Christian High School, said he followed Nebraska football as a youngster but never dreamed he would play for the Husk ers. “I have always wanted to play here, but 1 didn’t dream of it actually hap pening,” Reed said. “I never thought I was good enough to play here.” Reed said varsity place-kicker Chris Drennan, a sophomore from Cypress, Calif., had no influence on his decision to play at Nebraska. He said he did not know Drennan even though their California homes are only seven miles apart.
