Nee uses scrimmages to evaluate players
By Tim Hartmann
Senior Reporter
Nebraska basketball coach
Danny Nee will have three in
trasquad scrimmages this season,
the first of which will be Thursday
night at Falls City High School.
In addition to Falls City, the
Comhuskers will scrimmage on
Nov. 5 and 12 at Kearney and
Norfolk High Schools.
The Huskers will play an exhi
bition game against the Czechoslo
vakian National Team on Nov. 19
at the Bob Devaney Sports Center
and then open their season on Nov.
27 against Villanova in the Hawai
ian Airlines Maui Classic. The
game will be televised by ESPN.
Nee said the scrimmages will
give Nebraska experience and will
help him evaluate the players.
“The first thing we want to
accomplish is to get us in game
conditions — we’ll use officials,
play in front of crowds and use the
clock,” Nee said. “It’s also really
an opportunity for us to evaluate
people and try to play with differ
ent combinations.”
Nee said the team will be spilt
into red and white squads. He said
the teams are not necessarily di
vided into a first and second string
and are subject to change.
Nee said guards Henry T.
Buchanan and Eric Johnson will
play together “because those two
are probably your starting
backcourt.”
Seven players on the team are
freshmen, and Nee said inexperi
ence has shown in practice.
“It’s been slow,” he said. “It’s
slow because we’ve got a lot of
newcomers.”
Nee said freshman Rich King
and Kelly Lively have performed
well in practice. He said no deci
sion has been made on whether the
two centers will redshirt this sea
son.
Nee said the Huskers will bene
fit from the experience of
Buchanan and forward Derrick
Vick, both of whom started for last
year’s team that finished third in
the National Invitation Tourna
ment with a 21-12 record.
“I think it’s going to be very
important that our seniors really
show some leadership and consis
tency,” Nee said.
