    Springsteen escapes darkness
SPRINGSTEEN from Page 7
Bui the house is haunted and the
ride gets rough
And you' ve got to learn to live with
what you can t rise above if you want
to ride on down in through this tunnel
of love”
Ashedid in the “Nebraska”album,
Springsteen explores the horrors
people can do in “Sparc Parts.” A
deserted unwed mother considers
drowning her baby after reading about
a similar incident. But as she stands at
the river holding her baby, she
changes her mind. Instead, she hocks
her engagement ring and never-worn
wedding dress for “some good cold
cash.”
In ‘Tunnel of Love,” Springsteen
emphasizes the light — whether it’s
moonlight or God’s light — reaching
into people’s lives. The same familiar
Bruce icons are still around. His char
acters roam through the roads and
rivers and carnivals of America, but
here they do it out of strength and not
despair.
Springsteen has spent enough lime
in the darkness, and in songs like
“Two Faces” he admits that it’ll al
ways be there. But like the girl in
“Sparc Parts,” he once again manages
to escape.
