—w Npws Digest By The Associated Press__ Military jet crashes, killing at least nine Correction INDIANAPOLIS — An Air Force jet lost power short of a runway at the Indianapolis International Airport on * 3 Tuesday, clipped a bank building and exploded in a fireball into a crowded seven-story hotel, killing at least nine people. The dead were found in the lobby t and first-floor meeting rooms of the Ramada Inn Airport Hotel, where the A7-D Corsair came to rest. The acci dent occurred at 9:15 a.m. and fire fighters—some of whom saw the crash—were on the scene within two minutes. The pilot, identified as Maj. Bruce \ L. Teagarden, 35, of Las Vegas, Nev., ejected at about 800 feet, Mayor William Hudnutsaidatancwsconfer ence.' The only thing I saw was devasta tion,” said a witness, John Mentzer, “If anyone was in the lobby area, they are gone. It was like a napalm bomb. The heat, the flames. It collapsed the whole front of the building.” Indianapolis Fire Capt. Gary Campbell said the bodies were charred beyond recognition. The pilot was about 15 miles south of Indianapolis when his engine failed and he could not restart it, authorities said. Spitler said Teagarden ap proached the airport from the south west in a light fog but overshot the runway. The abandoned plane hit the roof of a Bank One branch, then skipped across the road and exploded into the motel. The Daily Nebraskan incorrectly reported Monday that the group Tax payers for Quality Education was formed for concerned citizens wor ried about AIDS. The group, which sponsored a panel discussion on AIDS Tuesday night, is concerned about “the most cost-effective education in our community’s elcmer»ary and secondary schools.” In Brief Administration begins automatic spending cuts WASHINGTON — President Reagan on Tuesday ordered the start of $23 billion in automatic spending cuts in programs ranging from AIDS research to military readiness. The reductions are mandated by law because Reagan and Congress had failed to reduce the budget deficit. James C. Miller III, director of the Office of Management and Budget, announced that 10.5 percent would be withheld from Pentagon programs and 8.5 percent from non-defense agencies, as each category absorbs half of the reductions required by the Gramm-Rudman deficit reduction law. Baptist church expelled for hiring woman pastor MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An association of Southern Baptist churches voted Monday to expel a congregation that chose a female pastor, citing the Bible as saying women cannot have “authority over men.” The Rev. Nancy Hastings Sehested, the newly appointed pastor of Prescott Memorial Baptist Church, is the first woman chosen as pastor of a Southern Baptist church in Tennessee and one of four female pastors of Southern Baptist churches in the country. The church issued a j statement saying Sehested will remain its pastor. Sfudy: holidays are not danger times for suicide NEW YORK — Holidays may deter suicide tather than encourage it, as has been widely believed, Psychology Today magazine says in its i November issue. i The magazine quotes a study by a University of California sociolo- I gist that found that between 1973 and 1979, when more than 180,0(X) < suicides were recorded in the United Stales, holidays had an average 102 I fewersuicidesthanotherdays.Thedaysbcforeandafter Memorial Day, < l Thanksgiving and Christmas also had fewer suicides. 1 It said the study speculated that extended visits by relatives during I these holidays may protect vulnerable people. V' ii .... —— in J i • . --- Stock collapse won ft bring a recession, Reagan says WASHINGTON — President Reagan, buoyed by the partial recov ery of the stock market, declared Tuesday, “There is nothing that has happened here that should result in a recession.” “Economic fundamentals in this country remain sound and our citizens should not panic,” Reagan said after an extraordinary meeting with Fed eral Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan and Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III todiscuss the chaos gripping the slock market after Monday’s record 508-point collapse. The Dow Jones industrial average regained some of its historic loss, ris ing 102 points on Tuesday. Reagan praised the action of the -edcral Reserve earlier in the day to nake emergency-loan money more eadily available to the nation’s >anks, saying it had “a salutory effect >n the markets.” He also said that he lad been in close touch with leaders of Jthcr major industrial nations. Reagan denied a projection, pre pared by a senior White House eco nomic adviser, that the nation might ace a recession as early as next spring barring a dramatic reversal of the stock market plunge. “It’s pretty hard for anyone to speculate on that” Reagan said. “The only way that could happen would be if the people of this country ignored the economic signsand then if you had people begin putting off purchases... because they feared hard times. Yes, that could bring on a recession.” Economists said Tuesday that apprehension about the crash could bring sharp cutbacks in consumer spending and lead to stark new per ceptions that the economy is vulner able, the budget and trade deficits are uncontrollable and the government is weak. “There is a strong relationship between changes in consumer confi dence and changes in the real econ omy,” said Richard Curtin, an econo mist at the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center, which pio neered the concept of consumer con fidence 40 years ago. “There’s no question that the kind of drastic and abrupt drop the slock market took will affect consumer sentiment.” Nebraskan Editor Mike Reilley 472-1786 Managing Editor Jen Deselms Assoc.
