Wildcats pledge to hold out against No. 2 Cornhuskers

seeing Kansas State drop a 59-10 deci
sion to Oklahoma Saturday at KSU
Stadium, Wildcat defensive back
Emmett Bradford issued a warning to
Nebraska quarterback Steve Taylor.
Bradford, who spent most of the
Oklahoma game trying to stop wish

and Charles Thompson, said Kansas
State will try to stop Nebraska by

forcing Taylor to pitch the ball on
option plays.
Bradford will get his chance at
Taylor and the rest of the No. 2-ranked
Comhuskers when Kansas State faces
Nebraska Saturday at Memorial Sta
dium.
“Our defensive schemes change
from week to week, but I think we’ll try
to get him (Taylor) to pitch the ball,”
Bradford said. “I say we’re going to
come out and smash him in the
mouth.”
Bradford said although the defense
played hard against the Sooners, they
will perform even better against the
Huskers.
“We’re going to play harder and
come in the game more wilder,”
Bradford said. “We are starting to
become very confident as a team.
We’re going to look up and rise to the
top. We’re coming at people harder
than we did during the Oklahoma
game. Every game we look to upset
people.”
Kansas State quarterback Gary
Swim said he thinks the Wildcats
won’t quit against the Huskers.
“Nebraska is just as good as Okla
homa is defensively,” Swim said. “But
Oklahoma players are not gods and
Nebraska players are not gods. We’ve
got to be ready for anybody, and we
can’t lay down. We’re going to fight
until the last second ticks off the
clock.”
Swim, who completed 10 of 24
passes for 140 yards against Okla
homa, said the Wildcats will be able to
move the ball against Nebraska.
“We’re going to run what we do
best,” Swim said. “If we have to run the
ball, we’ll run the ball. If we have to
throw the ball, we’ll throw it. We got
what it takes to move the ball. It’s just
a matter of time and taking advantage
of what they give us.”
But Wildcat running back Tony
Jordan said he is expecting a hard
fought game against the Huskers.
“They have great athletes at every
position,” Jordan said. “Nebraska has
great ends, so it will be hard to run
outside on them.”
Jordan has gained 345 yards this
season. The senior from Rochester,
N. Y., said the game against Oklahoma
gave Kansas State confidence.
“We feel we executed good a few
times against Oklahoma,’’Jordan said.
“We did some things real well.”
Kansas State linebacker Matt
Wallerstedt said he respects Nebraska
more than Oklahoma.
“It’s hard to compare them, but
Nebraska is more of a class act,”
Wallerstedt said. “I’ve always had
respect for Nebraska in the way the
players act on the field and the way
Coach (Tom) Osborne manages
things.
“I really don’t have any respect for
Oklahoma and guys who lay around on
the sideline in the fourth quarter.”
Wallerstedt said it will be hard on
the Wildcats to play the nation’s top
two teams back to back.
“It’s a tough thing for a team like us
who are trying to rebuild the program,”

Wallerstedt said. To play No. 1 ana
No. 2 back to back will be really tough.
We’re just going to go out and practice
real hard this week and try to im
prove.”
Parrish agreed.
“Now we go to Nebraska,” Parrish
said. “We will endure.”

fense propelled tne Nebraska vol
leyball team to a 15-6, 15-4,15-12
win against Oklahoma Saturday at
Norman, Okla,
Led by juniors Lori Endicott
and Angie Millikin, the Corn
huskers recorded 11 service aces in
the match.
Endicott had four service aces,
increasing her string of matches
with a service ace to 11.
Nebraska coach Terry Pettit
said he thought the Buskers served
and received serves well.
“I thought we served real
tough," Pettit said. ‘‘We also
played good defense even though
they (the Sooners) were serving
inside the 100-foot line.
“Serving is one of the most
important areas for us, and we did
a better job than they did.”
Oklahoma recorded no service
errors in the match.
Pettit said he was pleased with
the Millikin’s play. Millikin, an
outside hitter from Ogallala, re
corded a career best of 14 digs and
had two service aces.
“Angie Millikin did a real good
job for us,” Pettit said. “Since they
were serving short, she and Kathi
DeBoer did a fine job of passing the
ball."
DeBoer, a senior from Firth, led
the 18-1 Huskers with 12 kills. She
needs six more kills to reach the
300 mark for the third time in her
career.
