    UNL’s soccer team expects wins
despite young players this season
By Chris McCubbin
Surff Reporter
Nebraska’s soccer team has a
history of winning seasons, and
co-captain Kevin Lang said he
doesn’t expect that to change
this year.
Lang said he expects the
Comhuskers to have a good
season although they lost four
seniors from last year’s team
that finished fifth in the Big
Eight.
Nebraska opened its season
losing to the University of Ne
braska at Omaha, but then de
feated Concotdia College.
Lang said although this
year’s team is young, each
squad member has played soc
cer before coming to UNL. He
said he’s been playing since he
was 6, when he started cm a
YMCA team in Omaha.
Lang said the soccer club has
18 members. He said that figure
represents an average number
fora soccer team.
Lang said Nebraska doesn’t
have any international students
even though soccer is one of the
most popular sports worldwide.
He said many of the Huskers
rivals have international players
who are often the most skilled
and dangerous members of the
team.
Although the team usually
has a home at the Mable Lee
Hall field, Lang said, damage to
the goals that occurred during
last summer’s Comhusker State
Games has forced the Huskers
to move to a field located in
front of Whittier Junior High
School.
Lang said the team expects to
be back at Mabel Lee in a few
weeks.
The Huskers are preparing
for the University of Northern
Iowa Tournament Oct. 17-18.
He said the tournament is
Nebraska’s biggest challenge
until the Big Eight tournament
next spring in Stillwater, Okla.
He said the Big Eight Tour
nament presents a special chal
lenge to the Huskers because it
will be played indoors. Lang
said indoor soccer has only five
team members because it is
played on a small field where the
ball can be played off the walls.
