Comhusker plans to reach, pass Noonan’s level By Tim Hartmann Senior Reporter Nebraska middle guard Lawrence Pete is hard to miss at 6-foot-1 and 270 pounds, but he was still overlooked for all-state and all-city teams while he was at South High School in Wichita, Kan. “I never doubted my ability in high school,” Pete said. “I guess the reason for them not picking me for the all-city and all-state teams was they said I played a lot of positions in high school — I wasn’t a designated this or a designated that.” When it came time for college recruiters, Pete said, “I was the man.” Pete said he was recruited by Ar kansas, Tennessee, Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska. He said he chose to become a Cornhusker because of the Nebraska program. ‘‘The academic success, the foot ball program definitely speaks for itself — we’re rated in the top five every year, year in and year out.” Pete started for the Nebraska fresh man team in 1984 and tied defensive tackle Neil Smith for the team lead in tackles with 36. He redshirted the next season, and last year backed up All America middle guard Danny Noonan. Playing in every game last season, he finished with 26 tackles, including five for losses. Pete said that playing behind Noonan was beneficial. “I watched him play and he’s a guv who stayed aggressive for four quar ters, which is something I need to instill into my game,” Pete said. “He was a very intense player.” Pete said as long as he continues to play, he feels he will improve. He said he will eventually play at Noonan’s level. “In the physical attributes I think me and Danny are comparable, but the ITT --— mental aspect — he was ahead of the game because he had a lot of experi ence,” Pete said. “I think with a lot of repetitions everything will fall into place.” Pete said he would like to follow in the footsteps of Noonan, a No. 1 draft choice of the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys, by playing professional football. Playing in the NFL isn’t a must in his life, he said. “If it comes, fine. If it doesn t, it doesn’t,” he said. “I have other things I’d like to do, anyway.” Pete, a junior, has already sur passed Noonan in the weight room. -- 1 Pete holds the Nebraska record in the bench press with a lift of 500 pounds, while Noonan’s top lift was 495 pounds. Pete said weightlifting is an impor tant part of Nebraska’s success. “We probably have one of the most intense weight programs during the season,” he said. “It’s not as strenuous as the winter conditioning and off-season program, but for in-season, it’s very strenuous.” Pete said between weightlifting, school and football he has a full sched ule. “It doesn’t allow time for relaxa tion,” he said. “You take all your classes in the afternoon, you go to practice in the evening and study table at night, and that’s the routine for the whole week. Saturday is the game, so basically the only time you have off is Sunday.” Pete is surrounded by such players as All-America candidates Smith and defensive end Broderick Thomas on the Nebraska defensive line. Pete said this is the reason this year’s defensive line has the potential to be the best line since he arrived at Nebraska. “The athletic ability is there, but the cohesiveness is yet to come,” he said. “But that will come with repetitions.’’Pete said Nebraska also has the talent to be the best team in the country. “We have enough talent to take it all,” Pete said. “It all depends on what everybody wants to do. If everybody puts it in their mind that’s what they want to accomplish, then it can be done.” i-1 Butch Ireland/Daily Nebraskar Nebraska middle guard Lawrence Pete.
