    Badminton
beneficial to
NU’s Novak
By Mark Derowitsch
Senior Reporter
Since there’s no demand for
badminton players in college ath
letics, Val Novak decided to play
volleyball at Nebraska.
Novak, a freshman from Oak
Lawn, 111., said she began playing
badminton while she was a fresh
man at H.L. Richards High School
in Oak Lawn. She said she began
playing badminton because her
high-school volleyball coach was
in charge of the team.
Now, she said, she plays an
occasional game with Nebraska
assistant volleyball coach Jay Pot
ter.
Nebraska coach Terry Pettit
said he doesn’t worry about Novak
getting injured while playing bad
minton.
“I haven’t said one way or an
other whether she could play or
not,” Pettit said. “It’s not like she’s
playing a pick-up game of basket
ball or football.”
Novak said playing badminton
has helped her volleyball game.
“In a way, both sports are the
same,” Novak said. “The arm
swing is basically the same. You
have to reach high in both sports to
cither hit the birdie or the ball.”
Pettit said he thinks badminton
has helped Novak’s hand-eye coor
dination.
Novak won two conference
badminton championships during
high school and led her team to the
state volleyball championship her
senior year.
Novak was recruited by Ten
nessee, Illinois, Western Michigan
■HDMr._,_
and Nebraska. She said she chose
Nebraska because of the Huskcrs’
tradition.
“Terry Pettit has always had
good setters,” Novak said. “I
wanted to learn and help out any
way I can.
Pettit said he thought Novak
was one of the best high-school
setters in the country.
Despite being included in Vol
■ . y-j.,,
Val Novak
Icyball Monthly magazine’s
“Fabulous 50” recruits, Novak said
she’s surprised with the amount of
playing time she has seen this year.
“I didn’t expect to play much
this year,” Novak said. “As a fresh
man, I came here wanting to learn
and help the team as much as pos
sible.”
Pettit said he’s pleased with
Novak’s progress.
Doug Carro!i/Daily Nebraskan
“Val has a lot of potential,”
Pettit said.
Novak said she would like to
lead Nebraska to the national
championship before she leaves.
“I want to be one of the main
people in the starting lineup in the
future,” Novak said. “I would also
like to help lead the team to as far
as weean go, and I think that we can
go all the way.”

WINGBACKS from Page 8
when we rotate like thatany number ol
us can play. 1 really don’t like it, but I
don’t have any say so because of the
type of position I’m in, because I’ve
been hurt.”
Hawkins and Sheppard gave op
posing critiques of their play this sea
son.
“Overall, I’m pleased with my
performance,” Hawkins said.
“I’m not happy at all,” Sheppard
said. “I’m kind of disappointed in the
way my knee has come along, be
cause I thought that I’d recover a lot
faster than I have.” The surprise of the
wingbacks has been Bell, Brown said.
Bell is a 6-foot, 195-pound redshirt
sophomore from Altadena, Calif.
“Richard Bell has really made a
good move, crown said. tie s an
extremely good runner and his pass
receiving is improving. He has a great
feel when he catches the ball and is a
tough blocker. He is probably the
biggest and the strongest of the wing
backs.”
“We’re a run-oriented team, so of
course we’re going to start off with the
run, but if it comes down to it, we will
pass,” Brinson said. “We have a bal
anced attack.”
But the Cornhuskers’ main con
cern is winning the national champi
onship, Hawkins said.
“First we’ve got to win the Big
Eight,” he said. “That’s our number
one goal, and then from there we go on
and try to win the championship.”
Besides playing wingback, Brin
son and Sheppard also work with the
special teams. Sheppard has not re
turned a punt or kickoff this season,
but said that now that his knee is
feeling better, he’d like to.
