A 15-12, 15-12, 15-17, 15-7 win over the No. 19-ranked Nittany Lions Saturday night before 847 fans gave them a 3-0 record and a first-place finish in the tournament. Friday night, the No. 7-ranked Husk ers defeated No. 20-ranked Minnesota 15-7, 7-15, 15-11, 12-15, 15-9 and then upended Central Michigan 15-6, 15-7, 15-2 Saturday afternoon. Pettit said he expects a tough match with Minnesota. “It was a good, hard match with two good teams,” he said. “I love playing that kind of match this early in the season, particularly when you win.” Against the Gophers, Virginia Stahr led Nebraska with seven serving aces — a new team record — in a five-game set. Stahr broke the old record of five held by Annie Adamczak. Carla Baker set a record for blocking assists with 12. Pettit said Stahr has the ability to control a game. “When she gets jacked up she changes the whole flavor of the match,” he said. The play of his team under pressure in the Minnesota match pleased Pettit, he said. “It’s playing tough when things aren’t exactly right and that’s how we won,” Pettit said. “We were in our rhythm the first game and they were in their rhythm the second game. The last three were the trenches. A lot of things aren’t going right and you’re making a<(just ments on the other team, and if you are playing tough you’ve got a good chance to win it.” Central Michigan didn’t provide the competition that Minnesota did, Pettit said. “I thought we did some nice things,” Pettit said. “This team allowed us to do some things a little bit more than Min nesota. “I really don’t recall individuals in this match. I just thought it was one of those matches where we got a rhythm and played pretty nice volleyball.” Nebraska’s play in the match also impressed Central Michigan coach Marcy Weston. “Nebraska is an outstanding team, there’s no doubt about it,” she said. “There is no way we thought we could beat them.” Rose said his team could have given Nebraska a tougher match if he had had the services of outside hitter Eli zabeth Ramirez, who was out with mononucleosis. "She would have been the best out side hitter in this tournament,” Rose said. “1 would take her over (Kathi) DeBoer, personally and she is only a sophomore.” Nebraska’s DeBoer, whose 25 kills against Penn State set a school record for a four-game match, was named the most valuable player of the tourna ment. Other members of the all-tournament team from Nebraska were Stahr, Baker and junior Lori Endicott. Rounding the team were Penn State's Lisa Leap and Noelle Zientara and Minnesota’s Andrea Gonzalez. Endicott made the team despite spraining her ankle early in the first !?ame of the Penn State match. "She sprained her ankle in the first name and just gutted it out," Pettit said. “Endicott’s a tough nut. I am ifraid to look at it (her ankle), because she wouldn’t let you know if it was jroken.” ^ \NVCW PLAN •MAJOR SPEAKERS •CHICANO AWARENESS DAYS •BLACK HISTORY MONTH •POW WOWS •DANCES ; PLUS MORE!!!
