Lieurance lets bias
discolor his stories
Thank you for printing Ed Higgins’
letter (DN, Sept. 4) criticizing the
journalistic incompetence of Charles
Lieurance, super reporter and under
ground pop culture icon. It is true that
Lieurance has a good set of creative
writing skills, but he suffers as a jour
nalist because he is unable to separate
personal bias or fact from opinion.
My criticism is based upon fact from
opinion.
My criticism is based upon the p opu
lar belief that good journalism presents
a clear set of facts to the reader and
opinion is saved for the editorial page.
Lieurance has obviously overlooked
this fact and lets his personal bias dis
color everything he sees through his
Lennon spectacles.
Mr. Editor-in-chief, please review
your overstuffed file cabinet of similar
complaints and honestly evaluate the
performance of Lieurance. It’s been
said before, “Save the trees, keep Lieu
rance out of print!”

Reader outraged
at Goodman’s slur
I would like to complain about the
sexist slur found in Ellen Goodman’s
editorial (DN, Aug. 26). Goodman wrote:
“The Dubious Equality Award is sent
annually to women who have proved
that they can be just as piggish as
men.” Imagine the outrage had she
written, “The Dubious Equality Award
is sent annually to men who have
proved that they can be just as bitchy
as women.” Such a sweeping dispar
agement of “men” or any other group
reveals a hostile and bigoted attitude
— an attitude Goodman apparently
would have us believe she abhors.
