Black students at the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln have a chance
to break down racial barriers and
share their culture, said the chair
person of UPC’s Black Special Events
committee.
Chairperson Tonya Horn, a senior,
said she wants to see the University
Program Council join students to
gether and close the' gap between
the different groups of students on
campus.
“I get frustrated that black stu
dents don’t have any entertainment
or culture on campus,” Horn said.
“If we didn’t have a group such as
Black Special Events, nothing would
get planned or put on for the black
people on our campus.”

Events is financed by student fees.
Honi said that without the Amer
ican Minority Council, UNL’s black
student government, and Black
Special Events, the black popula
tion on campus would be even
smaller.
Motivating black students is dif
ficult, she said, and attendance at
events has been low. Last year, as
president of the African Peoples
Union, Horn said, she found it hard
to get students excited about being
involved. She said she wants to see
some events in the future that are
directed at black interests. Horn
said she would like to see some
rhythm and blues acts at parties.
Last year Black Special Events
sponsored the Miss Black UNL
pageant and the Rev. Jesse Jack
son’s speaking engagement.
