The game will mark the first time that the two teams have ever met. It will also be Shane Thorell’s first game as Nebraska’s coach and will be the first time St. Thomas uses its new schemes on offense and defense that were installed by first-year coach Vic Wallace. The game will also be the first of the season for both teams. “These guys have been pract icing for a long time,” Thorell said. “They’re anxious to play a game.” Thorell, who spent five years as an assistant coach before assuming his current position, said he is also anxious to begin the season. “I’m excited about it,” he said. “For any game there is a nervous ness. If there isn’t, there is some thing wrong. I’m anxious to see what we can do as a team.” Thorell said Nebraska’s offensive and defensive lines will be the strengths of this year’s team. He said those two areas, plus a talented backfield that includes I-back George Achola, will help the Huskers have a successful season. ‘These guys have been practicing for a long time. They’re anxious to play a game.’ — Thorell “The offensive and defensive lines are our strength,” Thorell said. “That is important because that is where you start: your offense and defense.” Thorell said he had planned to start Leodis Flowers at I-back, but Nebraska football coach Tom Os borne announced that the Omaha native will redshirt. Achola or Steve Mitchell will now join fullback Randy Williams in the backfield, Thorell said. Thorell said Keithen McCant will start at quarterback, and Tom Haase and Troy Lindsley will also play. “I feel we have three capable QBs,” Thorell said. “I feel confident with any of them in there.” St. Thomas assistant coach Tim Johnson said Nebraska will present problems. He said the Tommies are taking a realistic approach to the game. “We know we don’t match their size and speed, but we’re hoping we can make it up technique-wise,” Johnson said. “It will be a positive experience." Johnson, the St. Thomas offense coordinator, said the new schemes on offense and defense make it dif ficult to tell what the Tommies’ strengths and weaknesses are. He said he thinks St. Thomas’ strength will be the new schemes, while its weakness will be the newness of the system. CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-2588 FOR SALE ~ NEED FURNITURE?
