Nebraska’s Kathi DeBoer works on her returns during a
recent Cornhusker workout at the Coliseum.
DeBoer set to lead
NU volleyball team
By Mark Derowitsch
Senior Reporter
Last year, Nebraska’s volleyball team
was led by three All America performers:
Karen Dahlgren, Tisha Delaney and
Enid Schonewise.
Because all three players graduated,
senior Kathi DeBoer said she expects
to be counted on as the team’s leader.
“Each year your role changes for one
reason or another,” DeBoer said. "Being
the only senior, I need to help others
out more this season.”
Nebraska volleyball coach Terry Pet
tit also said DeBoer has a new role.
"She will be our strongest left-side
attacker, so she will have quite a few
balls set for her this season,” Pettit
said. “She is also an excellent blocker
and defender."
DeBoer was a starter on last year’s
NCAA runner-up team that finished 29
6. She earned NCAA Mideast Region
all tournament team and second-team
all-Big Eight honors.
DeBoer said that the 1987 Buskers
would do as well as last year’s team.
"We are a young team compared to
previous years,” DeBoer said. "That can
be good in that we will have new play
ers learning together. I think we can be
just as good or even better then last
year if we discipline ourselves keep
working hard.”
DeBoer said hard work was the key
ingredient that enabled her to be a
three-year starter for Nebraska. DeBoer
said she has improved since her fresh
man season.
‘‘I’ve become more of a complete
player,” she said. ‘‘I’ve noticed an all
around improvement in the past years,
but that takes a lot of hard work and
dedication. You have to keep pushing
yourself and be open to learning new
things.”
Pettit said he has also seen improve
ment in DeBoer.
‘‘She’s physically stronger and more
of a consistent player,” Pettit said.
“She’s a lot more confident and has
eagerly accepted more and more respon
sibility."
DeBoer said she would like another
chance at the Final Four, but added
that the Huskers will have to work as a
team to accomplish that goal.
“My job this season is to make sure
we stay within our game plan and to not
panic when we’re playing under pres
sure,” DeBoer said. “It will be a differ
ent situation helping others through
the tough times, but I think I can get
the job done.”
I Royals’ manager fired
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Billy
Gardner, who was named to replace
the ailing Dick Howser during spring
training, was fired as manager of the
faltering Kansas City Royals Thurs:
day.
He was replaced by John Wathan,
manager of the Royals’ Triple A farm
te am at Omaha and a former Kansas
City catcher.
The Royals, who led the American
League West early this summer, had
fallen to 62-64 and fourth place
Thursday, 3 1/2 games behind Min
nesota. Gardner, 60, a former Min
nesota Twins manager, was hired
last year as a third-base coach after
Howser was hospitalized with brain
cancer. However tried to return as
the Royals’ manager in spring train
ing but quit after a few days because
of weakness. Howser died in June.
