FarmAid III volunteers needed Students interested in being volun teers for FarmAid III are invited to attend a Students for FarmAid III meeting in the Nebraska Union Thurs day at 6 p.m. More than 300 volunteers are needed to put on the 12-hour concert, said Tim Moore, project coordinator for the Uni versity of Nebraska-Lincoln. Following tne meeting, volunteers will meet with members of the Mqjor Farm calendar men aid crisis By Mary Nell Westbrook Staff Reporter A group of good-looking men is out to change the image of the Midwestern farmer and help the failing farm econ omy at the same time. Through a non-profit organization, Farmers of Ongoing Determination, The Dakota Men’s calendar should raise money for agriculture scholarships and eventually for direct aid to needy far mers, said Perry Miller, vice president of FOOD and Mr. December. .. ... ‘We’re tired of always being stuck with the ‘Green Acres’ image.’ —Miller About 50 men from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota auditi oned for the c alendar when the project began late last year, Miller said. These men are all handsome and all farmers, he said. ‘‘We’re tired of always being stuck with the ‘Green Acres’ image,” he said. The Dakota Men calendar is trying to break the image of overall-clad pot bellied farmers. Miller, 26, who poses in a red bath robe near a fireplace for his month, said he hopes this also might bring women to North Dakota. He said anyone who wants to write to these men can write to the address on the back of the calendar and he would make sure they get the letter. ‘‘These guys are very accessible,’’ he said. ‘‘We even thought about putting their addresses and phone numbers with their pictures, but they might really be flooded with calls and mail when the calendar comes out." The calendar will be available to the public by the end of September, Miller said. The photos are done tastefully and are authentic when it comes to the outdoor farm scenes, Miller said. One farmer is out in his own field combining his own grain, he said. The calendar men work in all areas of agriculture such as hog production, ranching and grain farming. One man is a spray pilot and another will be going to Harvard business school. The requirements of the calendar included being single and earning at least 50 percent of their income from farming. The men’s ages range from 20 to 41. The 14 men in the calendar were chosen by about 14 press women from the Midwest, Miller said. Next year, Miller said, he hopes to get men from more Midwestern states. “The bigger this thing gets, the more states we will be able to reach and we will be able to get more money for farmers,” he said. The calendar men all happen to be doing well in farming, Miller said. “We’re guys who are doing well who want to help those who aren’t,” he said. Miller said he hopes to sell close to a million copies. He said they have had interviews with Cosmopolitan and Woman magazines. The calendar has made nearly $10,000 so far, including donations from local businesses. "We’re not going to try to restructure a farmer’s debt or get them out of debt,” he said. "That’s unrealistic.” Concerts Presentation Team in the Nebraska Union. Moore said Students for FarmAid III and Mgjor Concerts Presentation Team will combine their efforts to help put on FarmAid III. Moore said that at the second meet ing students will be informed on all volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are needed for preparing the stadium for the concert, laying out the tarp on the Memorial Stadium football field and cleaning up. “There are a variety of things to do,” Moore said. Moore said volunteers will receive T-shirts for their efforts. If volunteers work the day of the event, tfiey get in free, he said. Jay Mulligan, coordinator for Stu dents for FarmAid III, said he started the group last spring because he wanted students to play an active role in the event.
