Film series gives students second chance
By Scott Harrah
Senior Editor____
Students who missed some of the
better art films at the Sheldon Film
Theater last year can still see them in
Omaha. The University of Nebraska at
Omaha’s Fall Film Series features many
of last year’s independent hits.
UNO film spokesman Rod Matuke
wicz said “indie" films like “Sid and
Nancy and "Farting Glances" were
chosen for the series because they
either had short runs in Nebraska or
didn t play at the mainstream theaters.
A lot of people don't hear about
these movies and probably wouldn’t
get to see them otherwise," he said.,
Unlike Lincoln, he said, most Omaha
video rental stores don’t carry art films.
He said minority-related films like
the black-oriented “Native Son” and
the gay-oriented "Parting Glances” were
selected because few Omaha theaters
show films aimed at subcultures. “Sid
and Nancy” was chosen because it only
ran a few weeks in Omaha and many
didn’t get a chance to see it, he said.
The following films are scheduled to
play in UNO’s Eppley Auditorium:
Aug. 28-30: “Sid and Nancy”
(Britain, 1986). Director Alex Cox’s
acclaimed film about the ill-fated love
affair between punker Sid Vicious, his
groupie girlfriend Nancy Spungen and
their fatal heroin addiction.
Sept. 11-13: “Lady and the
Tramp” (United States, 1955). A
Disney classic cartoon.
Sept. 18-20: “Scene of the
Crime” (France, 1986). Director
Andre Technine’s Cannes Film Festival
award-winning tale of a 14 year-old boy
dealing with his parents’ divorce and
an escaped convict who accosts him.
