Measles shots
now required
By Kip Fry
Staff Reporter
For the second year, new students at
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln must
be immunized for measles.
The Nebraska Medical Association
recently announced that outbreaks of
measles on college campuses account
for about 20 percent of reported cases.
Young adults who have not been vacci
nated with a live virus vaccine probably
are not protected from the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control in
Atlanta recommended that colleges
and universities install an inoculation
policy, after studies showed the high
percentage of measles cases on college
campuses.
While there is no specific deadline
* for the shots, students who hae not
turned in proof of vaccination by Sept.
16 will be mailed a reminder, said
Gerald Fleischli, medical director of
the University Health Center. After Oct.
16, a $26 fee will be charged and
another letter will be sent. The policy
specifically affects freshmen and trans
fer students.
Students who do not respond by the
end of the semester will have their
grades withheld until they do, Fleischli
said.
Last year, UNL administration held
the grades of 17 students, Fleischli
said. However, they all eventually com
plied, he said.
“The response this year is even bet
ter compliance, because people know
that we mean it,” Fleischli said.
Students must give the health cen
ter proof of the month and year of their
last measles inoculation, Fleischli said.
The health center provides shots for
$20.

ORR from Page 1
"This (plan) will broaden the pers
pective for competitiveness," Liberty
said. "We were the only state to offer
this."
U S West operates extensive research
projects, Baca said. NU would play a
large part in the new research facility,
connecting professors and students
with the large corporation for research
in the technical sciences.
Rowson said university officials have
known that emphasizing research would
be a plus not only for the university, but
for Nebraska as well.
Baca said that a proposal such as
Orr’s could be a deciding factor in
locating the research facility.
"It’s good that states’ governments
are recognizing the importance of re
search and the importance of competi
tiveness," Baca said. "It’s heartening
to see that the state of Nebraska is
willing to put such an effort into
research and education."
