Check out the libraries
By Terri Hahn
Staff Reporter
For many University of Nebraska
Lincoln freshmen, this fall may be the
first time they write a research paper
— a task that requires at least one trip
to the library.
The campus libraries and the Lin
coln Public Libraries provide the mate
rials and the assistance to aid students
in such a task.
The main library for the UNL library
system is Love Library on City Campus.
Most services are there, along with the
administrative office. Other services also
can be obtained at the C.Y. Thompson
Library on East Campus.
Handouts available at the library
information desks, say that services
available at Love or the branches in
clude:
• Subject specialist librarians
who work with the faculty and students
of an academic department to develop
collecitons and to interpret collections,
library services and policies.
• Computer search services
provide online access to indexes,
abstracts and other information sour
ces. For a fee, the library can provide a
list of references for a specific topic.
Certain types of statistical data also
are available.
Interlibrary loan can help locate
books or journals that are not a part of
the UNL system. There may be a fee,
depending on where the material is
borrowed from.
• Microforms of old newspap
ers, periodicals, books, government doc
uments, telephone directories and col
lege catalogs are just some of the
information the library has for easy
access.
• CopiCards are available for
purchase for use in the photocopiers.
These cards are available for $5, $10
and $25 and allow copies to be made
without having to feed change into the
copy machines. There is a one-time
deposit required when the first card is
bought.
More information on any of these
services may be obtained at the infor
mation desk at either Love or C.Y.
Thompson.
Students may obtain a library card
at the circulation desk of either Love or
C.Y. Thompson.
A current student ID is required to
obtain a card. These cards remain valid
as long as the cardholder is a resident
of the state. There is a $5 replacement
fee if the card is lost or stolen. If this
should happen, the loss should be
reported to the library as soon as pos
sible. The person whose name appears
on the card is responsible for all mate
rials checked out on the card.
The loan period for most books is
four weeks, and they may be renewed
unless on hold for another reader.
Other materials, such as periodicals,
have varying loan periods.
Overdue charges vary depending upon
the original loan period of the material.
Branch Libraries
C.Y. Thompson serves the Institute
of Agriculture and Natural Resource,
the College of Home Economics, and
the Barkley Memorial Center. Services
at C.Y. Thompson are similar to those
offered at Love, while those offered at
the branches vary.
Other branch libraries are Architec
ture, Architecture Hall 322; Law, Col
lege of Law, East Campus; Physics,
Behlen Laboratory 265; Math, Oldfather
Hall 907; Dentistry, College of Dentis
try 8, East Campus; Engineering, 2nd
floor west, Nebraska Hall; Geology,
Bessey Hall 10; Chemistry, Hamilton
Hall 427; Biological Sciences, Manter
Hall 402; and Music, Westbrook Music
Building 30.
Hours for the branch libraries ano
the services offered at each location
are available at the Ldve Library infor
mation desk.
Lincoln Public Libraries
UNL students are also eligible to use
Lincoln Public Libraries. The main
library is Bennett Martin Library at
14th and N streets. Branch libraries are
located throughout the city. The Bethany
Branch, 1810 N. Cotner Blvd., is close to
East Campus.
At Bennet Martin, students can get a
library card by presenting two forms of
identification; one must contain a cur
rent address. If an ID with a current
address is not available, addresses can
be verified by filling out a “mail-out”
card.
The Lincoln libraries provide many
services, namely the Polymusic Library,
including collections of musical scores;
a fine arts department with pictures,
records, films and videocassettes; and
the Heritage Room, which contains
materials by Nebraska authors. Period
icals and photocopiers are available.
More information on services, library
hours and branch locations may be
obtained by calling 435-2146.
